http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topoisomerase_inhibitor

Topoisomerase inhibitors are agents designed to interfere with the action of topoisomerase enzymes[1] (topoisomerase I and II), which are enzymes that control the changes in DNA structure[2] by catalyzing the breaking and rejoining of the phosphodiester backbone of DNA strands during the normal cell cycle.
Numerous plant derived natural phenols (ex. EGCG,[6][7][8][9][10] genistein, quercetin, resveratrol) possess strong topoisomerase inhibitory properties affecting both types of enzymes. They may express function of phytoalexins - compounds produced by plants to combat vermin and pests.

few examples out of vast polyphenol compounds out there present in herbs, fruits and vegetables.

Use of topoisomerase inhibitors for antineoplastic treatments may lead to secondary neoplasms because of DNA damaging properties of the compounds. Also plant derived polyphenols shows signs of carcinogenity, especially in feuses and neonates who do not detoxify the compounds sufficiently.[11][12][13] An association between high intake of tea (containing polyphenols) during pregnancy and elevated risk of childhood malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumours has been found

just one example of a confirmed type of tumor occuring when consuming polyphenols from either herbs, fruits or vegetables.

for ease, ill pick on a popular one.

This property might be responsible for observed anticarcinogenic effects; however, there is also a carcinogenic potential. High intake of polyphenolic compounds during pregnancy is suspected to increase risk of neonatal leukemia. Bioflavonoid supplements should not be used by pregnant women.[25][26][27] Maternal consumption of tea or coffee during pregnancy may elevate the risk of childhood malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumours through unknown mechanisms.[

since its wikipedia, its not possible to have all the info available just in one article, but i have read medical journals relating flavonoids and polyphenols (present in fruits and vegetables at high amounts) to be responsible for more than the one here stated here type of tumor in new borns. and if required, i might have to waste few hours finding urls i used to save all around folders.
my question is, why are there no warnings on fruit and vegetable consumption that warns pregnant women not to eat them ?? it really pisses me off that marketers of "natural" products deceive, if not already healthy people who can metabolize them effectively, at least pregnant women ? thats low. :(

They also tell you not to smoke or drink during pregnancy but I've seen pregnant mothers do both and their babies come out just fine. You can't live in a bubble. What are pregnant women supposed to eat if they can't eat fruits, vegetables, or herbs?

i guess it is why humans are not born perfect. because of such complications and the impossibility of a strict and precise way of developing unless grown in a lab.
obviously its based on too much fruits and vegetables. doubt if they eat small amounts will harm fetus BUT same can go for cigarates and alcohol i assume or any toxin. now, how do you deal with minimum amounts or being moderated ? no clue.

point of this thread wasnt to critisize, support or discourage use of certain polyphenols but rather, why nobody ever warns of such negative probability associated with opposite of the always "perfect" picture painted by nutritionists ??
my answer is business. nutrition business is growing ever so HUGE for a decade now. and i dont see the peak just yet of it. its major business that probably makes more than pharmaceuticals now. all for the delusion human has of "perfection". *shakes head*

okay I see what you're saying. I agree that the food production business isn't always transparent about what ingredients are in their foods, or what effects those ingredients might have on your health if you consume too much of it. but fruits, vegetables, and herbs.... raw, in a natural state, come from the earth. True they are grown by farming companies who may or may not spray pesticides on them, but it's not something that is 'manufactured'. I don't know what you would consider safe to eat if food that came from the ground isn't.

You could argue that the air you breathe isn't safe for you to breathe either because it contains trace amounts of toxic gases. The amphetamines that you take are even moreso toxic than fruits and vegetables. Like you said, humans aren't born perfect, you won't live 'perfect', and that's okay with me. Literally everything is toxic to some degree, you won't die from something just because it's toxic. They don't put a warning on the apples in the grocery store....they would have to put a warning on literally everything we come into contact with.

euphoria, you know humans didn't evolve to such extent as we are now because they constantly took antioxidants and ate baskets of fruits and vegetables. so why are so many people thinking its good if we start now ? many nutritionists ive met recommend awfuly high doses of polyphenols for good health, but its double edge sword. there are journals proving their effectiveness in cases, while some do comment on their toxicity to extent, especially in vulnerable individuals like in fetus or new born.
my theory based on evidence i have gathered so far, too much fruits and vegetables wont be 100% beneficial, might even be detrimental and useless; and people, especially pregnant women, should question many of those marketing systems, including doctors (who profit from you actually being sick) or mega selling vitamin manufacturers and their nutritionist promoters.

nutrionist = big vitamin manufacture marketing
doctor = big pharma manufacture marketing

So, I think you are just trying to point out the fact that a lot of foods that are advertised as 'healthy' aren't necessarily as healthy for your body as nutritionists and doctors claim them to be, and they could actually be harmful? Alright, well, point taken. I feel the same way. There are a lot of foods out there with this double edged sword, and I wonder exactly what foods you're referring to and how much of them you have to consume to have any negative effects.

^ Seconded.

Not to mention, asecin, I don't know where you're getting your information from, but from the nutrition standpoint, there is a LONG way to go before healthy eating and overall nutrition latches on half as tightly to the public's mind and actions as big pharma. I've done clinicals in hospitals and in long-term care. You know how many people I've met with nearly "perfect" diets, high in fruits and vegetables like most "nutritionists"* tote? Two. You know how many people I've met with medication lists as long as my arm? Nearly all of them.

*"Nutritionist" isn't a regulated term in some states. People who do not have degrees can call themselves "nutritionists" depending upon where they live. So, if you ever go see a "nutritionist", please ask them where they graduated from, and make sure they have "RD", "DTR", "CN" or some other recognized acronym after their name. In NYS, anyone off the street can call themselves a "nutritionist"--There's legislation in the works trying to prevent this, but it's an upward battle as the lawmakers don't care. People being able to call themselves "nutritionists" without having any sort of medical/nutritional background is diluting the field and making people lose their faith in those of us who don't act like big pharma.

addictivepersona, would you recomend pregnant women consume diets high in polyphenols ??
