Should I be Honest with My Doctor?

I have a herniated disk and have had some procedures done. After procedures he will prescribe Vicodin.

I do have considerable back pain fro time to time. I don't go to him because I don't want to labeled a 'drug seeker'.

I'm able to procure Vicodin through 'other' sources but it's expensive. Should I tell my Doctor I've been doing this?

Sure but for what reason? Telling him beforehand might not be the best idea, as you will look like a seeker. Maybe after he already prescribes you say: I've been taking it already from xx.
But why would you say this anyways?
 
Definately dont tell him you have gotten them before without a prescription. Unless you dont want any medication.
 
As everyone's said, if anything tell him after you have filled the prescription, but you're going to be labeled a drug-seeker and any follow-up scripts will be for motrin, I doubt he'd even give you tramadol or darvocet after you told him that, Sad but doctors are idiots 99% of the time
 
^ I wouldn't say it has to do with idiocy more so then the doctor protecting his ass. Even if he wanted to, giving a script to someone who has admitted they have used that medication illegally could get his ass in trouble.
 
But it's not as if he's using it illegaly per se, he's using them as a doctor would recommend, a doctor just won't script them to him because he's ignorant, I think that's the best word, he doesn't know he really needs them so he generalizes him into an easy group he has no problem denying.
 
I told my doctor that I tryd my friends Ativan for my anxiety and that it worked. He prescribed me 20 sublingual ativans that very day.
 
No, infact your dr should be looking out for your liver. I have herniated discs and a range of other shit going on and I get roxicodone. My dr won't script ANYTHING with APAP.

Do not tell your dr you get vicodin elsewhere but do tell your dr you are concerned for your liver.

He is using them illegally per se, he is buying them without a prescription. Sure, it's not like the OP is using them just recreationally, he has a valid reason for using them. But a doctor can get in a lot of trouble if they knowingly provide drugs to a drug seeker and that is why they will deny narcotics to people who admit using them illegally, though I don't doubt there is some ignorance out there as well but it comes down to the risks for the doctor in prescribing them.
 
Should you be honest with your doctor if he is scripting you say 500mg vikes when 2-3 barely do anything for you? Would they believe that you just have a natural high tolerance to pain killers?:\ I just had collarbone surgery and was contemplating telling my doc I need something better than vikes. Never did though.
 
However, immediatly following the surgery I told him the vicodin was not working very well and he did script me some percocet.... SCORE:)
 
actually, it depends on your doctor. in my case, i told my psych every drug that i've done. rx and not, a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong enough list for most square doctors.
i have a bar script, 30mx addy xr and ir.
 
I wouldnt. I would go to your doctor and tell him about the pain and show him an MRI showing you have a herniated disc and he may prescribe something. Usually the people that are worried about being labeled a drug seeker, are drug seekers. But if you really have pain just go see him and be honest about the pain you have, I wouldnt say anything about using vicodin through another source unless you get drug tested, but thats just my opinion.

There are more options for a herniatied disc, conservative treatments and surgery is very successful especially in first time patients.

The larger number in the hydrocodone combinations is APAP, the hydro is the lower number. So a 500mg APAP combo could have varying amounts of hydro in them...most common doses are 5, 7.5, and 10mg (not sure which pairs with 300, but just showing the numerical difference). So, if its 2 or 3 with only 5mg hydrocodone, that actually might not be enough for some people and pain.

I told my doctor that sometimes my back would hurt, and that the pain stuff wouldn't help...and that I had taken xanax (which I'm prescribed) and it helped way more. They gave me a small prescription of cyclobenzaprine, the muscle relaxer Flexeril, which actually works quite well. I was being honest though, at the time I didn't even know what Flexeril was, and I was actually originally hoping for maybe more xanax for the issue if anything other than 800mg ibuprofen. Don't know if something like this will work for you or not.

But, do NOT tell him you are buying pills off the street, after I had been on xanax for a while I told my doctor my dad gave me a valium because I left my script at school and was home for a weekend and that I liked the xanax better...and it turned into a conversation about how every benzo is different. Be careful what you say, no matter how cool the doctor is, he does have rules he needs to follow to keep his license.
 
I don't see how telling him can be beneficial to you in any way. I can't understand why you would want to tell him. To prove that u r honest? He'd think u r more trustworthy if an issue like that never even comes up.

And if possible get something with the least tylenol possible, like norco. Definitely say u r concerned for your liver. All that tylenol is never good and tylenol is not that effective anyways.
 
I've never told my doctor that I was buying something regularly on the street and using it either recreationally or for legitimate reasons. I have however told him when I first started getting panic attacks that I would go to the first bar I could find and have two shots of whiskey, or when I was with my girlfriend she would give me ambien and at this period of my life before I was being treated for panic disorder these were the things that worked. He didn't judge me for this at all and scripted me xanax and ambien.

I wouldn't tell him about buying vicodin, just make it clear that you're in pain and need something stronger. I think most docs want to help you feel better and get better but not help you become a drug addict, even though this happens quite often. I also think that in my case he saw I was truly suffering and needed something that was more therapeutic than alcohol.
