Short term effects on Eyes from drugs

Hey all.

I did a search but i cant seem to find the info i am after here.
I was just wondering, out of the common drugs, i just wanted to make a little list of the effects they do on peoples eyes.

Like obviously MDMA makes peoples pupils dialate.

I think ketamine makes your eyes appear bigger, or like they are popping out of your head kind of.

Im not quite sure though, and would appreciate anyone elses input on this subject

Opiates tend to make pupils smaller.
Most stimulants, psychedelics and entactogens tend to make pupils larger.
Cannabis and related THC-analogs tend to make pupils larger as well.

what is the chemistry behind Stims, psychs and entactogens that make the pupils larger? Why do they all do this?

i see so, We should naturally (Some people have problems with dialation) , have pupils that contract automatically obviously to let in more light (ie dark room) then constrict , which lets less light in.

I wonder what relation light sensitivity becomes an issue, See my pupils when im clean and all, have always (Before drug use too) , the pupils have constricted and contracted Constantly even if the light is the same in the room.

i wonder if our ability to filter out excess light becomes more ineffective if we use drugs (not whilst on drugs but after they are long gone out of our systems)

I'd say that with psychedelics (in my experience), having really big pupils probably contributes to the intensity of light (the psychedelic in question probably helps too though)

i have very little experience with psychadelics, Ketamine being the only one ive ever tried so i cant relate to that, but i have read about your view on certain psychadelics being like in a painting or something?
So i can see how the excess light could bring out something rather wonderful.

It does bring out something wonderful. And I've only done a handful of 'em, but psychedelics do make things look like (and feel like) an impressionist painting.

I wanna add though that doing a fuck load of opiates and then rubbing your eyes too much while you have the itches is not good for your eyes short term or the next day. My eyes have been very sore today from the abuse I must have given them when I was sniffing the ODT like there was no tomorrow. They are still really sore and dry and look terrible.

In general though, opiates make your pupils smaller, most stims and psychs make them bigger and benzos also make them slight bigger, but not with everyone.

My dad could always tell when I was on a high dose of benzos though, not because of me acting like a benzod up maniac, but from my right eye becoming lazy, he would just take one look at my droopy lazy eye and know what I had been up to.

Your eyes can be a massive giveaway if people know what they are looking for.

Very true. Usually its other people who take drugs that know, vs. parents, cops and other people that could bust you.

I have always thought of it as stimulants -> activation of fight/flight mechanism -> activation of sympathetic nervous system/depression of parasympathetic nervous system -> pupillary dilation, increased energy, sweating, anorexia (as blood is diverted away from GI tract), hyperthermia, even fits with urinary hesitancy..

I imagine that in evlutionary terms dilated pupils allow you to see your threat/predator/food more easily.. although taken to extreme the obvious is definitely the case as I can see fuck all on stims but sympathetic nervous stimulation does result in pupillary dilatation, where as parasympathetic activity results in constriction.

This could be completely wrong, but I remember when learning about the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems how closely they mimic the effect of certain drugs - tis how I memorised some of their effects, hehe.

Will add your link NT to my "topics to research and read about" list, along with long term safety of APAP and having a look at the BDD dictionary. It will happen, hopefully this weekend, haha. Ueless druggies :D

But back on topic - ketamine often makes people's eyes point in slightly different directions I have noticed. I imagine this goes hand in hand with the loss of depth preception. Drugs often give themselves away in the eyes, not just in terms of pupillary midriasis/miosis.. cannabis red-eye is another one :D

i can see where light bein more intense would make ur pupils bigger but what about when your on good one with MDMA..why do your eyes shake

I only find this happens on a higher dose i dont know why it happens...
I just always get told "AH mate, i came up to you earlier with my hands out expecting money to fall out of your mouth you was like a Fruit machine!!!"

ya..its always happined in higher doses or just when i had a lower tolerance or got ahold of some better stuff
