I'm sure this has been discussed here, but I couldn't find anything in search.

I am running dangerously low on tramadol and have no more refills, so later this month I have to go back to the doctor with my hat in hand. I am saving what tramadol I have left for work this upcoming week. Today is Sunday and I decided to go without my tramadol today. Now, this will obviously arouse a violently uncomfortable withdrawal reaction. I have been on tramadol since 2003. During tramadol w/d, I find it hard to function normally. So bad, that I may be seen as deliriously ill anytime during tramadol withdrawal. 8o:(

I came across from Lomotil (diphenoxylate hcl / atropine) and did research. Upon finding it is an opioid similar to the piperadine line, it peaked my interest. However, my expectations were low when finding that doses between 30-40mg are required for substantial centrally acting effects.

I took 4 anyway (10mg of diphenoxylate). An hour and a half later I noticed diarrhea and stomach cramps from tramadol w/d completely vanished. Another 10 minutes my mood began to increase and my body feels so relieved. No chills, pacing the floor, yawning, or agonizing sensations throughout my body from tram w/d.

I am not "flying". The buzz is very subtle, but diphenoxylate, even in small doses appears to be a life saver for withdrawal. Any experience first hand yourself?

It is good for withdrawal. Its like a stronger Immodium that passes the BBB

Yes. :D
I am so relieved it is helping so well.
I typically try to procure hydrocodone and other opioids when I'm low or out of my tramadol. And this diphenoxylate seems to be helping better than even hydrocodone for tram w/ds. I used up to 40mg of hydrocodone the other day and it didn't bring relief from every withdrawal symptom. So the fact just 10mg of diphenoxylate is helping so well has me chipper. 8o

Just watch out for the Atropine in it! Take too much and yer off to delusionland.
But yea it's apparently great for withdrawals.

Also, I believe I read somewhere that some of the newer antacids (I tried to find the article, but couldn't, so feel free to take this with a grain of salt) can have the side effect of making the blood-brain barrier slightly more permeable. The reason that lomotil doesn't work like a full-on painkiller is because it can't cross that barrier...but if you happen to be taking Nexium, or Omeprazole (which is OTC in the STates), or Protonix, etc etc...you might give it a whirl. There's no danger associated with combining lomotil with a drug of this type, aside from the normal side effects of both (you can see 'em on wikipedia if you want)

Lomotil is an antidiarrheal/anticholinergic drug - most drugs with these effects are helpful during withdrawal for the obvious reasons as well as less obvious ones (many are derived from opiates and can cross the blood-brain barrier or they can work as fairly effective potentiators).

Atropine was mentioned above as something you don't want to take too much of and, in the interest of harm reduction, I wanted to expand a little on that for anyone stumbling across this thread and getting excited about taking a handful of Lomotil either recreationally or to help with WD.

Atropine = atropa belladonna = deadly nightshade

While atropine is a powerful and therapeutic drug used for centuries for a range of things, it is also a deadly poison. While atropine is an anticholinergic, the primary reason for it to be combined with diphenoxylate is to intentionally prevent misuse of the drug. Even at a very small dose, atropine can cause very unpleasant side effects. Do not casually swallow a large dose of atropine/Lomotil.

ive only had lomotil once. i took 60mgs looking to get a buzz and was severely disappointed. dont worry about the atropine. the amount in lomotil is 1/40th the amount of its therapeutic dosage.
