So I had a pretty strange experience the other night after 4mg iv of dilaudid. I know I should use a micron filter but I don't have a habit anymore and do it rarely. Prepared as I do, cotton filter, no heat. I had to reuse a needle, used once before (the guy at the pharmacy was being unreasonable) After this shot it brought be to 12mg for the day. I was using the generic 8mg circles, I am used to the triangle's. So I fixed and about half an hour later I had severe ringing/static almost to the point of pain. I was shaking a bit but stayed calm, drank water and was back to normal in about an hour. Did i have a slight overdose or is there some other explanation? Can you suck up cotton? What will that cause? Thanks for the help. Sorry if this is repetitive, I couldn't find anything with search.

I would guess your blood pressure spiked causing the ringing effects. Perhaps a histamine release due to the actual opiates, or an immune response to the inactives in the pill or the toxin left over from the bacteria in the cotton (cotton fever). Really it's impossible to say though. I'd invest in some micron filters even if you only inject "rarely."

You may have had a mild form of cotton fever. I don't know about the ringing in the ears, but it is usually accompanied by involuntary shaking and a very bad painful headache.

Did you reuse the cotton from earlier? How long ago was the needle used before this shot? Was the water sitting out at all?

Cotton fever is just the body's reaction to certain bacteria that grow in cotton. Or could be from any source of bacteria really. It is usually accompanied by what I mentioned above and a fever. I have had it where it starts at 30mins-1hour after a shot and subside after an hour.

Thanks for the info. I was shaking a bit and did have a headache. The cotton was fresh, but the box of qtips has been open for a month at least. The needle was used earlier in the day, and I rinsed it out with alcohol/water several times. What does a severe form of cotton fever feel like? If this was mild, it scared the shit out of me! Ill be checking out the micron thread in the future. Thanks again. Oh, and the water was not out more than a couple minutes.

Sounds exactly like cotton fever to me; I know I've had bouts where I thought I had somehow been given something to precipitate withdrawals, but I knew that wasn't the case, as it did take a little while to kick in. It can be pretty painful and the shaking is terrible. To me, the shaking feels like when the hydromorphone withdrawal starts setting in hard, accompanied by chills and sweats; though it does leave as fast as it sets in.
At first I thought it was just an old junky myth since I heard it from users who don't really know much about the drugs they use, other than they get them high. After looking into it, I then realized it was truth and felt like an ass after I told them they were crazy. So, this wouldn't surprise me.
