Hey all!

So I’m friends with a ring-tailed lemur who has a friend who recently discovered a retail cleaning product that contains GBL. The Lemur prefers GBL but it is extremely hard to find in Australia (1,4 Butanediol is easy but street price at $2.50AUD/ml). The product containing GBL is $2.80 for 8ml but contains additional ingredients that need to be separated. The Lemur’s friend advises that all that is required is that it is microwaved for 30 seconds (remaining quantity of allegedly pure GBL was around 5ml), he has dosed a few times and states the dose/effect is the same as pure GBL another of the Lemur’s friends has had imported from the EU.

The ingredients are:

Gamma-Butyrolactone: Boiling point = 204 °C
Melaleuca Alternifolia oil (Tea Tree Oil): Boiling point = 165°C
Stearic Acid: Boiling Point = 376.1°C
Acetone: Boiling Point = 57 °C

I’m completely inexperienced with separating compounds, but I’m serious about not ingesting anything that I’m not 100% certain is safe. I don’t want to just take someone’s word for it.

So, Acetone is apparently safe in small amounts: ‘Acetone can be found as an ingredient in a variety of consumer products ranging from cosmetics to processed and unprocessed foods. Acetone has been rated as a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) substance when present in beverages, baked foods, desserts, and preserves at concentrations ranging from 5 to 8 mg/L.[28]’

Tea Tree is mildly toxic when ingested, small amounts are allegedly not too bad, but I’d prefer to avoid it obviously.

Now the above two have a boiling point lower than GBL, so I’m assuming that they can be evaporated off at a temp. of 185°C leaving the Stearic Acid and GBL.

Stearic Acid has many uses, but two are: ‘Stearic acid is used along with simple sugar or corn syrup as a hardener in candies. Stearic acid is used to produce dietary supplements.’ (WIKI) So one might assume it is safe to ingest?

Any input is appreciated! My Lemur friend has had GBL posted before, but Australian customs aren’t to be trifled with and if this can be done safely he would be able to have a cheap reliable source for his infrequent (Few times a month) recreational GBL use.

Thanks in advance :)

First, welcome to Bluelight! Second, go read the rules and terms of service and whatnot, because this thread is going to get shut down faster than you can say infraction! Seriously, I'm not even going to bother counting how many ways you broke various rules.
