Hi Bluelighters,

How do I find out if a friend of mine has been sent to jail? All I know is that he was going to court (don't know which one) and now I cannot contact him.

Thanks,
Ecrystalize

Unfortunately you need his prisoner number to call. They will not look up information for you. You need to talk to his family. If he is in a watchhouse or a low security hospital mental facility, that would be a different story.

i would call the police to check on his whereabouts and what happened after he attended the court... well if he's in jail.. surely the police would know ....

no clue bout how it goes in aussie land but here in yankee land each state is divided into counties, my county (Broward) has a sheriff's office website where you can lookup inmates who are in custody in the Main Jail. Very convinient I might add as its saved me loads of times with friends. God bless America my home sweet home (takes a bow).

I tried to contact someone in Long Bay prison but was rejected because I did not know his prisoner number.

Thanks guys,
Call all the jails? He doesn't have family here either. I'll just have to wait to hear from him, I guess.
Cheers,

having recently been through similar I can tell you they will not provide any information at all....... They wont even tell you if the person isnt there.........
My understanding is that unless you are family you wont even be able to talk to them and Im not sure that family can either unless its juve.

You could try writing to them.......just ring the prison you think they are in and ask for the address.......send a letter.........if they arent there it will be returned.

Also be aware that in Sydney when u are first sentenced you will go to lock up in Sydney for a week or more before being taken to a cell at silverwater most likely and then eventually farmed out to wherever depending on what you did and how long etc.

I would wait 2 weeks before sending a letter if your in Sydney cos it will take that long to get out of the underground lockups.

Thanks MazDan,

So first you're taken to the underground lockup in Sydney? Where is that in Sydney?
Then nearly everyone is taken to Silverwater as their first prison? How long do most people stay at Silverwater before being moved elsewhere (if they are moved)?
I must say, it sounds just as bad as all the movies/tv shows portray!!

Thanks again,

Well a) Its a huge breach of privacy

b) people in prison usually have enemies outside - who have friends inside. It could be that you want to find out if someone is inside so you can organise with others in the same prison to do harm to the said person.

There are hundreds of reasons why they shouldn't disclose that information, you could be anyone. Get in touch with his family if you need information.
