Working at a busy supermarket, one of the main things that gets stolen on a very regular basis is sensodyne toothpaste. Once the shelves are filled its lucky if it lasts 2 days before every variety of the toothpaste is cleaned out. Now my managers tell me that its stolen for use in some kind of drug making. So just out of interest does anyone know about this? What ingredient is used in the making of what drug if this is the case?

Hahahaha thats weird as. If u rub it on ur gum it numbs it but other than that i dont think it contains anything worthwhile extracting.

How strange lol. What area are you in?

I'll have to ask some of my mates who work at supermarkets and see if they have noticed it.

Looking up the listed ingredients I can't see anything that would be of any possible use in any kind of biosynthesis. Perhaps someone like p_d can clarify this.

The most likely cause is because the toothpaste simply feels good. Conservatives have a habit of blaming drugs on a lot of strange behaviour.

not me personally, but i've heard of it being used to ease or numb stretching during sodomy! Maybe you manager has something to hide and brought drugs in as a diversion away from his indulgents?

There is no anaesthetic agent in sensodyne that I am aware of. It works by physically sealing over exposed dentine tubules. They would be better off stealing Bongella or some other teething gel if thats what they are after.

Perhaps a lot of meth heads have sensitive teeth?

That's fucked up, lol

Maybe there is some hard-to-find chemical in there, I do know Sensodyne is one of the more chemically-ridden toothpastes...

Nothing that fascinating about the ingredients. From wiki

* Potassium nitrate (5% )
* Sodium fluoride (0.15 W/V Fluoride Ion)
* Strontium chloride - creates a barrier around the Dentin
* Strontium acetate - creates a barrier around the Dentin
* Potassium chloride - nerve calming

I doubt this would have the same numbing effect if used in other areas of the body, but I could be wrong.

Looking at the ingredients, Potassium nitrate (saltpeter) has many uses, from fireworks to stump remover preparations, a preservative etc. Apparently, it has not been conclusively shown that it does reduce dentine hypersensitivity (wiki). We all know Sodium fluoride. What some people might not know is when it's swallowed, around half is converted by HCl in the stomach to the very toxic hydrofluoric acid!!

Strontium chloride and strontium acetate reduce hypersensitivity by forming a barrier over the exposed nerve endings in the dentine due to gum recession - not sure how this would go in other body cavities 8o Potassium chloride is important for nerve and heart function among other things. Can't see how this how this would aid in rectum numbing though, and although I have some KCl, I'm not in any hurry to see if it does =D

As for diversion to drug manufacture, I can't see why this would be so. KNO3 might have some uses in making nitrites, which can be used in certain routes, but there are far more abundant sources than the 5% in this preparation.

This all seems very odd, like we're missing an essential clue :?

i Blame inflation for this..;) or that its just a great product to use :) Even Busty has a point !! :)

I work for a major supermarket on the northern beaches and theres always empty sensodyne packets whose contents have been stolen stashed under the aisle. Seems to be one of the most stolen items after batteries and razor blades. I always thought it was a bit odd but just assumed it was because it was expencive...

junkies steal that product amongst many others and sell them to smaller retailers for a cheaper price, just an easy way to make money for the next fix. one of sydneys most notorious graff writers does this to support his addiction. case closed ;)

Of all the stolen goods to deal in your claiming that junkies handle toothpaste in order to fund their addiction?

By hell is that odd, never in my wildest dreams would I have thought of that one.

I would have gone with Doctorwar's idea of cocaine cutting agents if it does indeed produce some sort of numbing effect, although there would have to be many other more effective and more vaible options out there. Lignocaine (SM-33) for example.

My manager now tells me sensodyne is now being taken off the shelves and is to be reformulated to take out the ingredient used in the manufacturing of 'speed'. Can't be sure exactly whether that's amphetamine or methamphetamine but i found the ingredients as stated on the box:

Active Ingredients: Potassium Nitrate (5% ), Sodium Fluoride (0.15% w/v Fluoride Ion). Inactive Ingredients: Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Flavor, Glycerin, Hydrated Silica, PEG 8, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Saccharin, Sorbitol, Titanium Dioxide, Water, Xanthan Gum.

Does this make any more sense?

Still makes bugger all sense to me....

This thread is the first I've heard of it being commonly stolen from shops

Would like to get to the bottom of it, as meth fucked my teeth and it would be funny if it was actually used in it's manufacture, although I highly doubt it...
