After a video was released of Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus smoking the legal plant salvia, Sen. John Flanagan is calling for the banning of its sale.

The video, which can been found all over the Internet, shows the star of Disney's Hannah Montana smoking salvia out of a bong at a party earlier this month.

"As someone who is a role model for millions, the video of Miley Cyrus allegedly smoking salvia has made the public more aware of the dangers posed by this legal substance, and I am hopeful it will inspire the Assembly to join me in fighting to ban its sale in New York state," said Flanagan, R-East Northport. "This is a gateway drug that is known to adversely affect people with the possibility of causing long-term damage and we need to get it off the shelves of our community."

This guy has put in several Salvia bills over the years that have collected dust. Ignored by the other senators. Then the jwh-018 bill was ignored earlier this year. So I have some respect for the other senators that ignore Mr Flanagan through the years. NY has bigger things to worry about than some senator that wishes he could get the attention that Salvia has been getting. Pretty immature and now resorting to lies. I'd like to hear what his fellow senator think about him.

Strange how laughing and smiling and possibly having a humbling learning experience is now considered dangerous.

who gives a shit about salvia, its like one of those things you try once and then you never try it again because its not fun. But they still shouldn't be making it illegal, its just a friggin plant....oh wait our gov't thinks nature is illegal now..

"salvia is chewed or smoked to induce illusions and hallucinations described by users as similar to those induced by ketamine, mescaline or psilocybin."

Right.... if that was true it would actually, you know, be popular.

its shit so who cares anyway-

ooohhh no they are banning an unpleasant drug that you dont really want to repeat (damn i'm gonna miss out so much!)

I'm upset because its the one drug that i actually respect. Its not about keeping it illegal its about keeping people from knowing what it is. If you were ready you would discover it, just to find out you still weren't ready. Its like i tell people who ask "at least read people saying "you cant prepare yourself for it" lord knows even i couldnt"

Thats what pisses me off about it how many people have been mentally raped because of this bitch smoking it.

The article concedes these points no doubt:

"Numerous individuals report experience negative effects during their first experience and indicate they will not use it a second time."

^^^And "Salvia drug party in US". Yeah a few adventurous teenagers smoking salvia = "drug party in US". It only shows that kids will always try something/anything to catch a buzz. Make salvia illegal and they'll sniff glue or duster...it doesn't make a difference. If anything it'll make salvia more popular and give it that badass edge.

If you see things from a bit of a broader perspective, instead of focusing only on how the proposed law would affect you personally, you may notice that they are taking our rights away, one law at a time.

I think it is the fact that the gov feels it is their right to control our consciousness that is so upsetting to many people here.

As it is, the situation reminded me of Jews in Nazi Germany, for example, who didn't rise up and protest when the Nazis began persecuting the gays, since that was a different group. Then foreigners began getting persecuted, and the Jews didn't protest again. Etc. etc. until the Jews themselves became the targets.
(I admit that I may have the order of things wrong here, and also that the Jews were unlikely to have been successful in rising up, but I believe that my point is undamaged by this.)

In the same way, the gov may not have made your DOC illegal yet, but it will soon, you can bet on it.
OTOH, if your DOC is already illegal, and you therefore don't care about them making more people's DOCs illegal, it seems like you are missing the point.

"gateway drug" ?!
"known to adversely affect people"?
"possibility of causing long-term damage" ????

What a fucking liar.
Spewing time-worn propaganda to try and incite the ignorant masses.

I'm not sure which is more infuriating, the actions of idiot lawmakers like Flanagan, or the inaction and stupidity of the ignorant masses, time and time again.

the video of Miley Cyrus allegedly smoking salvia has made the public more aware of the dangers
yeah, that video looked really fucking dangerous.
"This is a gateway drug that is known to adversely affect people with the possibility of causing long-term damage and we need to get it off the shelves of our community."
someday, those who support these moralist anti-human policies will be dealt with by the same law they used to abuse.

A disney channel star did it, so this must mean that every kid in all of our great country is at risk to be the next...SALVIA ADDICT AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ban it now before all our children do nothing, but smile and laugh. I certainly know that I don't ever want to see a child smile ever again and I have made it my goal to see that this goal is reached very soon!!

ha wow how can they lie like that. fact check...

Speak for yourself some people including myself actually like it in a odd way. Everyone has their own preferances when it comes to drugs. I don't like the effects of alcohol (anymore that is) and many other people i know don't either so should we ban that? Also cocaine kinda makes me feel like shit and is horrible on the comedown so i guess that does not affect me either. That damn speed sure makes me feel like shit after 4 days awake on the stuff so i guess that does not affect me either and so who gives a fuck?

The point is that they are bringing in oppressive laws that are essentially a war on anyone who uses drugs.
