Seeking information for a book I'm writing..

I doubt I can be of much help, I really think what you need is to read a lot...maybe even an experiment in vivo...that for sure would give you some insights for your book. Datura is out of question though.

^ He's saying you could just take something yourself. (Edit: At least I hope that's what he means, in the context of this thread it could be read differently.) An experiment in vivo is an experiment that is carried out "within the living" as opposed to in vitro meaning "within the glass" (like a petri dish).

These drugs that would be used to create the slave, what I'm assuming would be psychedelics, hallucinogens, hypnotics, deliriants, etc, would use in combination with sensory deprivation, confinement, torture, exhaustion, starvation and sleep deprivation, forcing them to watch suggestive videos and listen to suggestive whispers all of which reinforce the new reality, that they were never free or an individual, they had been created for this purpose alone and that they always existed as such, and that it is a great honour to have even been created to serve.

This description reminded me a lot of Project MK Ultra. If you haven't heard about it, that would probably be worth checking out as it can give you an idea of how people have actually tried out these things in reality. Although it is my understanding that while they certainly succeeded in developing techniques for breaking people down psychologically, they never came close to implanting a new personality or anything like that. But then again if they did, would we know? ;)

Seriously though, IMO people get carried away with their fantasies when thinking about brainwashing and come up with these elaborate schemes of having people tied down, eyes forced open Clockwork Orange style and stuff like that. The kinds of brainwashing techniques that do actually work are much simpler. For example think of soldiers going through boot camp and then being willing to risk their life upon order.

That's good. Not trying to convince you. I shouldn't have said anything really.
The MK Ultra tip sounds good for you. As Tokezu mentions it will probably make you realize how much fantasy you are going to have to build on.

Even if a deliriant like datura or angels trumpet (or any other atropine/scopolamine containing plant) were to allow you to persuade someone to obey you, the effects are generally pretty debilitating and would make the slave pretty useless. Imo using opium would lead to similar results... Furthermore, I personally don't think any hallucinogen would really work for the story... they kinda do the opposite of enslaving people (psychedelics especially).

As far as controlling people goes, what comes to mind as the most possible (but still very doubtful) would be stimulant addiction, although I don't believe romans had access to any truly powerful stimulants like amphetamines. In the orient they were using Ma Huang (ephedra) around the same time, but I don't think that'd really do the trick, ephedrine is far too weak... I'd suggest you invent some "magic" plant/drug because nothing that exists really fits the bill... I'm sure if it did exist we would already be using it on each other lol.
good luck with the story.
