Hi,
I got Valproic acid (Deprakine) and I am interested to try it but I am hesitating because of those nasty side effects that it could have. Ex. Black box warnings about fatal liver damage etc.
I got seizure few weeks ago and I would like to use this medicine as it increases GABA and when used in combination with PAMs (like Clonazepam or Lorazepam) it's doses could be kept quite low I guess. Example Lorazepam 1mg per day and 150-300mg Deprakine a day would be enough I imagine.
But does anyone here know what is the mechanism why valproic acid causes even fatal liver damage and even fatal pancreatic problems? Does it requires some underlying problem or can it affect anyone even healthy persons?
I would like to use this medicine but these side effects really worries me. If someone has info about mechanisms these damages occur and how they could be avoided I would be thankful.
Or would Carbamazepine be better choice?
Best regards, Jambabomba.
