The second of three guards at the St. Louis Justice Center accused of trying to smuggle heroin to inmates pleaded guilty Friday to two federal drug charges.
Peggy Lynn “Pumpkin” O’Neal, 48, admitted accepting $200 on two occasions, Jan. 29 and March 3, to smuggle heroin to an inmate.
An inmate who was working with police and the Drug Enforcement Administration had approached O’Neal and asked her if she would smuggle heroin in to the jail, Assistant U.S. Attorney Hal Goldsmith said in court.
O’Neal contacted the inmate’s “friend,” who was actually a DEA agent.
O’Neal, James L. Moore, 36, and Marilyn Denise “Peaches” Brown, 54, were all arrested in April. Brown and Moore face one count attempting to distribute heroin. Moore pleaded guilty Wednesday. O’Neal pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of the same charge, and now faces 30 to 37 months in federal prison under federal sentencing guidelines when sentenced in October.
O’Neal’s lawyer, John Lynch, declined to comment after the hearing.
