Second-hand smoke globally kills more than 600,000 people each year, accounting for 1% of all deaths worldwide, according to a new study.

The alarming findings - published on Thursday in the British medical journal Lancet - are based on a survey of 192 countries in 2004.

Researchers estimated that annually second-hand smoke causes about 379,000 deaths from heart disease, 165,000 deaths from lower respiratory disease, 36,900 deaths from asthma and 21,400 deaths from lung cancer.

Children account for about 165,000 of the deaths, according to the researchers.

I feel like every person who gets one of those illnesses is counted if at some point in their life they can be linked to possible second hand smoke. I really doubt every single one of those cases was actually caused directly by secondhand smoke.

Not defending smoking at all, we all know it can cause this shit. But really, think about how much more smoke a smoker inhales than a second hand smoker.

^Exactly.

I don't doubt that second hand smoke is bad for you, however you cannot tell me it is directly linked to 600,000 deaths per year. That's ridiculous. Like caseface said, think of how much smoke an actual smoker inhales. If that statistic were true, anyone who's ever smoked only a few cigarettes in their lifetime would have be dying of cancer or some other related smoking disease. Doesn't add up...

Yea, i absolutely dont believe this at all. Its fuckin ridiculous. If you look into it and do some research you will find that the US govt especially, dramatically exaggerates the risks of secondhand smoke and their statistics are manipulated. they have rejected studies that didnt come out with the results that they wanted, and continued searchin til they found ones that said the things they wanted them to say, etc....the second hand smoke thing is such bullshit.

dont get me wrong...If you work somewhere that smoking is allowed inside and everyday and night you are inside this smokey ass closed environment, THAT is an example of secondhand smoke that i can see as a reasonable threat or danger.

But the majority of this shit is people worried about standing OUTSIDE in open air in a park while somebody 5 feet away from them smokes a cigarette, etc. Its fuckin ridiculous. "Secondhand smoke can kill you! From sitting in a car, with the passenger and driver side windows both open all the way, while the driver smokes a cigarette and drives at 65mph and the smoke blows out the window as soon as its exhaled, you can DIE!!! secondhand smoke,!!!`111oneoneone!"

Being in a room with no ventilation while somebody smokes cigs on the regular for hours. now something like that, there is secondhand smoke that is enough to have dangerous exposure.

but the majority of peoples concerns of all this "secondhand smoke" is absolutely fuckin absurd....People worrying about the guy on the beach 2 blankets away from them havin a cig and the wind is blowing the smoke in their direction....people complaining that the smokers gathered around the cig. butt receptacle thing, 25 feet away from the doors of the college, are exposing them to secondhand smoke becuz they are forced to WALK PAST THE SMOKERS as they make their way to their next class....Shit like that....The exposures is NOTHING....that shit aint gonna fuckin kill nobody. Bein stuck with a smoker in a enclosed unventilated area for a decent amount of time=bad, but the majority of 'secondhand smoke' situations are people quickly passing by a smoker for a few seconds while they walk past/the smoker walks past them, or who are sitting in a area a few yards away from a smoker in a open, outdoor environment like a park or beach, etc.....its so goddamn stupid the way they keep hyping this shit and tryin to make it like this huge threat.

All the statistics i seen say that DIRECT SMOKING, you know, BEING A SMOKER, only kills like 450,000-500,000 people each year, so how the fuck can SECOND HAND SMOKE kill MORE than that?

its so, so clearly bullshit. its just straight the fuck up goddamn ridiculous, its a fucking joke that they release reports like this. I aint even a smoker. i dont smoke so I aint got a ulterior motive of defending smoking becuz I like to do it or w/ever. But the shit is just insane how far they are taking it these days. Using lies and false made up manipulated data and statistics to try and scare people is just pathetic and disgusting. The sadder thing is how many people believe this bullshit and actually genuinely think that 'secondhand smoke' is this huge, serious, dangerous threat and get all fuckin high and mighty, and try and get laws passed like "You cant smoke outside in any public spaces, becuz of TEH SECOND HAND SMOKES!!1111" and shit like that. Its gettin WAAAY out of control, shit is pathetic.

I'd like to see the research. I'm curious as to their testing methods. Seems to me they are just pulling out an arbitrary number big enough to give the public a scare.

second hand smoke supposedly kills that many people, and pot is still illegal in the age of vaporizers *sigh*

This is horsehockey. Didnt the OSHA do a study where they found that a whole mess of cigarettes had to be smoked simultaneously in a small room(idr exact numbers and dimensions) for there to be any kind of health ridk from secondhand smoke?

in other news, there are over 6 billion humans on earth. loosing a few hundred thousand to anything is no big deal.

i think this has some substance. think about this if there are 1000 people smoking cigs. and all 1000 people have 1 kid that one kid is exposed to the smoke for lets say no more than 10 years, with no smoking at all this kid is going to suffer damage and possible lung and health complications, i think its just a general statement saying that second hand smoke can kill and is a real problem. people who dont smoke can be effected by smokers!

but there statistics could/are probably strued

they count the *extra* diseases that those living near smokers get, compared to the amount of diseases people not living with smokers get

I would like to see the stats for the number of deaths that secondhand smoke DIRECTLY causes.

And where the fuck is the control? How can they say that they know these deaths are from livin near smokers? If you live near a smoker and you get a disease that a person livin near a nonsmoker didnt get, then you got it from secondhand smoke? This is such bullshit in every way. they just manipulate these numbers til they sound the way that they want em to.
