Hello all,

Is there a good guide for abbreviations and terms used on posts here? I've searched using terms like dictionary, glossary, word guide, etc., and so far haven't been able to find one. I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the abbreviations and non-standard terms and am having difficulty pulling enough context clues... but if I just start responding to every single thing with "what means this", I'm going to have to change my name to "SpamQueen50000", and no one wants that.

Fun story: while reading at another forum I elected not to join, I tried to solve some on my own. A big reason I came to BL is because y'all don't use SWIM. I spent an embarrassingly inordinate amount of time trying to figure out what that meant before settling on "Some Woman I Met" and thinking it really limiting/rude/sexist that no one ever talked about SMIM. #Fail

Perhaps I just am failing at using the search box properly? Last night Inwas reading a lengthy "Case Studies" post about... well... case studies. The site went down for a few minutes for routine updating and maintenance and returned me to "home" when it returned. Now I can't find that, and I'm fairly certain it was just called "case studies". How hard could that be to find?

It was a huge thread and I'm going to try to find it again. If anyone else has it saved, can you tell me which subforum it's in? I think the OP who was running it is a clinician of some sort, perhaps a research pharmacist or something similar. The case studies specifically revolved around why harm reduction is so important, and included case studies and anonymous patient reports from medical literature wherein best practices were not followed. It included stuff like retained needles, an intraoccular administration, massive infections, etc. It was good reading and I'm bummed that I lost it.

Thank you again!

I really wish that I could help you here but I don't know of any glossary of abbreviations that is on this site. You could use one of the many online glossaries as the acronyms used here are pretty commonly used online (internetslang.com).

Also with 'Case Studies' they could be anything and in any section as we have a lot of studies dotted around the place (you can use your web history and find the page you were reading (Cntrl+) - could it have been out Neuroscience section ? There are also some case studies in our MAPS discussion section.

If your unsure about an abbreviation just ask somebody will help you out :)

I have seen an explanation of some abbreviations in the guidelines somewhere. Ill have another look to find it. Would it be a good idea to have the list up somewhere here? Lingo is always changing these days.

Ok in FAQ tab under greenlighters guide- behold a list of terminology:

SWIM - Someone who isn't me (Use of this term is discouraged on BL; it is used on some forums in an attempt to avoid incriminating oneself, e.g. "SWIM is considering manufacturing meth, what does SWIM need to know?". There is no evidence that this provides any protection from legal repercussions, and it makes your posts hard to follow. Also, many people switch between "SWIM" and "I" in the same post. Finally, you shouldn't be incriminating yourself (drug synthesis, dealing, etc) on Bluelight anyway)
