The Music Genome Project

On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

Over the past 5 years, we've carefully listened to the songs of over 10,000 different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

this thing is SO badass! u just put in songs or artists you like and it creates stations for to listen to with the music you love and then attempts to match your tastes with new music...pretttty dope

Nice find, maybe it can find me some new bands. Also makes me wonder how long till everything is 'completely' databased like this (not just music)

yeah, this is pretty neat.

i've been using a pretty similar thing called last fm (www.last.fm)

i made a list of all the artists i really like, and i just put that into the search and it plays songs either by them or simliar groups.

but i like how this explains the similarities...
 
Aww hell yea! I was hoping more ppl had heard about this.

Pandora really is the shit. It makes for great party music, I play it at just about every get together I have...

My favorite part about Pandora is that whatever band name or song you put in, it finds similar sounding music for you.. There are bands and projects and music I've never even heard before in there, and I don't think I really dislike any of the music Pandora has chosen for me...

Is there a standalone app for this or no? Pandora is pretty good...maybe with a bit more development it could go places.
 
I know this is an old post, but I was going to post about Pandora anyway...

I started using Pandora a few months ago and I fucking LOVE IT. I have a jazz station, a soul station, a funk station, an ambient station, an eclectic station, drum n bass, etc.

I've 'discovered' so many new artists. Hear it on Pandora, do some research on allmusic and then purchase from amazon. Pandora is helping me build a kick ass music collection. I don't even block the ads, I figure they're worth it.

Just had to gush about pandora my new best friend.
