"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Israeli scientists have cultivated a cannabis plant that doesn't get people stoned in a development that may help those smoking marijuana for medical purposes, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

According to the Maariv daily, the new cannabis looks, smells and even tastes the same, but does not induce any of the feelings normally associated with smoking marijuana that are brought on by the substance THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol.

"It has the same scent, shape and taste as the original plant — it's all the same — but the numbing sensation that users are accustomed to has disappeared," said Tzahi Klein, head of development at Tikkun Olam, the firm that developed the species.

OK, I may be missing something super obvious... how would this help someone who smokes cannabis for medical reasons in any way?

The only thing I can see this being useful for is as a placebo for future studies. I wonder if this cannabis truly has 0 cannabinoids in it, or just no THC?

EDIT: I actually read the article and got some answers. Maybe I should read articles before commenting in the future ;)

So cancer patients get to be hungry like they've smoked but they don't get to enjoy a pleasurable sensation. Yay? They can suffer with the satisfaction that humanity has endeavored to make sure that only what is minimally functional to persist in existing longer has been done for them. What a victory for morality and the work ethic. Being high is a wrong kind of consciousness and in itself can't possibly accomplish any good because what does it do for Jesus or the economy?

Xactly! What the f*ck is wrong with euphoria? I get so tired of dancing around the pot thing. Euphoria IS part of the healing aspect. The high IS part of the healing aspect. The effects on the mind ARE part of the healing aspect.

Ditch weed, LOL. :D

That all depends on how you define healing. An an-emetic does not have to be a euphoriant to be an anti-emetic. Surely the 5HT3 antagonists demonstrate that. An analgesic does not need to be euphoriant either, I'm sure we've all had local anesthesia for dental work that was effective but not psychoactive in the least. The overwhelming majority of drugs are not euphoriants or even psychoactive whatsoever, they are still very useful and effective, are they not?

That said, STOP THE PRESSES! OH MY GOD! Recombinant DNA technology produces gene knockout! EXTRA EXTRA. Hardly fucking newsworthy.

it might be useful for people who want a medication for something but don't want it to change or disrupt their daily pattern/activities.
There's more to cannabis than a "numbing sensation"...
i had the same thought, it does the opposite. a more pertinent question would be, can it make you dizzy or worse at driving while getting accustomed to it? and if you don't feel numb, does it relieve pain?
