My pain management doc writes me one script for Vicodin with no refills and soma with 1 refill. Long story short I could not get to my doctor quickly enough to refill the Vicodin but I did refill the soma on time a week or so apart. Because I had no pain killer I used most of the soma to compensate for this past week going against what is expected of me. A few major pharmacies know I have health insurance. Rite aid and mom and pop Pharms do not. My question is, do I try and fill both scripts after 5pm when my docs office closes (which I will get tomorrow) at rite aid which does not know my current health insurance and just say I don't have health insurance and pay cash to get both scripts filled. Or does rite aid have the ability to look at all scripts filled regardless of health insurance. I don't mind paying a lot of money this month to do this. Last time I saw my doc I asked for Xanax because I was in the same predicament. She said this could kill me and gave me cymbalta, which did nothing for me. If I ask my doc to fill my soma early, I feel she will label me. What is the best course of action?

They can check the state prescription monitoring program and see when and where you filled all controlled substances.

So if I fill in another state? Nearby but another state at rite aid which does not know my insurance I'll be ok. I really don't want to jeopardize my doc but the doc is pretty strict. What would you do? If I go to another state after 5pm what are my odds. Thanks for the reply btw.

Also will the out of state pharm see my address and say "why are you filling this here hours after it was written?" I can come up with a valid answer but again I don't want to jeopardize my relationship with my doc?

Nearly every state (if not every one by now) has one of these programs. Some states now have the ability to check some surrounding states as well. An out of state address could be a reg flag to a pharmacist to something inappropriate going on, but it is not illegal. They very well could call your doctor though.

A little bit of a different situation but I had a script for hydromorphone 0 refills as well and ran out early. My doctor wrote me a new script but he didn't put a date on it and I took it to my regular pharmacy (Shoppers DrugMart) and they said blah blah we can't fill it yet it's too early. So I went to a completely different pharamacy company to get it and they had no record of my scripts. But I did pay cash. I did not have benefits at the time. I am not sure if it shows every script you got if they can see your benefits. I assume not, they can probably just see the coverage. I hope that helps a little!

Pharmacists aren't stupid, if they see you're from another state filling an opiate script, the light bulb will go off......

In 2002, I was in Las Vegas for 3 months vacation & back then, doctors gave several refills on the bottle & I had told my doctor that I was going across the country for several months.

Anyway, the pharmacy out in Vegas wouldn't fill my script until they got a hold of my doctor.

You're playing a dangerous game by trying this.......just wait it out.

Yeah I have a similar situation.I moved to a new state a couple months ago.I didn't know when I might find a doctor in my new state so right before I moved I saw my old doctor and asked him if he could give me a couple of refills on my xanax because I was terrified of running out.He readily agreed, writing me for my usual dose through September, post dating the scripts and saying it shouldn't be a problem to get them filled and if need be the pharmacy could call him.I found a doctor in my new state so I didn't fill the old docs scripts.I'm afraid to fill them, even at a little mom and pop pharmacy who knows my family.Afraid I might somehow get in trouble.Sure hate to lose three scripts though.New doctor is now threatening to cut me off,in which case I will certainly get them filled. If I attempt to get the one from July filled I wonder if I would have any trouble.

They have really cracked down on this .. The only loophole I've found is that you can get two prescriptions of the same drug as from two different doctors as long as the mg is different. Example one dr writes 30mg roxy and another writes 40 mg roxy...

^ Yep, standard federally mandated practice with any Schedule II narcotic. Some states don't even allow out of state CII's from being refilled. Pretty much all pharmacies have "the right to refuse service to anyone" and can use that if they won't do this even in states where you legally could fill the scripts if you had the appropriate documentation arranged ahead of time.

When I travel, I NEVER try to refill anything where I'm going, I always have my doctors write me 3-5x the normal quantity they normally would instead so that I get multiple months worth to take with me to prevent my need to deal with refills.

Anyways, we don't allow discussion about doctors and early refills, sorry..
