Salvia: The still-legal high that has lawmakers taking action

Fred Schum thought he was falling through books after he smoked the hallucinogenic herb Salvia divinorum. Another time, he thought he had become part of the couch.

Schum's experiences are not uncommon. The effects of Salvia include perceptions of bright lights, uncontrolled laughter, a sense of loss of body and seeing objects that are not present, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which has classified it as a "drug of concern."

For now, Schum and some other New Yorkers using Salvia -- which delivers a high some closely associate with LSD -- need not worry about running afoul of the law because it is legal in most parts of the state.

That could soon change.

A bill banning the sale of Salvia in New York has been re-introduced in the state Senate. In the Assembly, there have been similar talks -- ranging from banning the substance to regulating it, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, D-Endwell, said.

"It's a serious problem that is now emerging," Sen. Thomas W. Libous, R-Binghamton, said. "It's similar to the sixties when LSD and acid became a serious illicit drug issue."

As of September, 24 states had enacted legislation placing regulatory controls on the plant and/or its active constituent, salvinorin A, according to the DEA.

A push to regulate the herb has gained momentum after it emerged in the spotlight twice in recent months.

The first occurred when a video of teen pop star and actress Miley Cyrus allegedly smoking Salvia surfaced on the Internet. The second turned up just days ago when it was reported Salvia was used by Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old man indicted following the Arizona shooting rampage that left six people dead and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords critically injured; 12 others were shot.

I can't say I'm unhappy. This is bad shit. If they could make it schedule III or something so it's easier for scientists to research for any possible positive effects I'd say that's better than schedule I where it's nearly impossible for anyone to get it, even with a DEA license.

How does someone that misinformed get into office.....and yeah thanks Miley Sirus, and AZ shooting guy way to make a harmless drug look so evil. Someone ship him MDPV in jail and see what happens.......

Once that video of Miley Cyrus came out I knew it was only matters of months before the entire nation wants it banned

Uhh... if you smoke Salvia the most you're going to do is roll around on the ground and giggle. Never seen anyone coherent enough go on a shooting spree after smoking Salvia.

Will the prospect of federal scheduling make much of a difference in a few years when all of your states have wild and wacky laws that all contradict eachother as far as cannabis is concerned? I know it's an old argument, but will they have enough money to go send DEA helicopters on anti-salvia missions when they don't seem to be able to make up their mind about whether to raid pharmacies now?

Shouting a story of virtue to billions does cost us money in the process usually, as that dries up the shouting of the x_th untied bureaucracy probably won't. :D

The DEA used to have massive support from the general public and they have been funded like unregulated nuts for a long time, as this country and its economy go to shit you know they will still shit talk with the public speaking powers they have combined with their stances. (They are still funded, but the black market and availability of drugs are not something they can even claim to keep up with these days.)

I wouldn't call salvia being high... It's more like being teleported to a different universe for a few minutes. It isn't exactly euphoric.
