A warning about a popular new drug

12:39 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 4, 2006

By JESSE JONES / KING 5 News

SEATTLE - Authorities are taking a closer look at an herb that's becoming a popular party drug with teens.

It’s perfectly legal but may be dangerous. Its hallucinogenic effects are said to be nearly as strong as LSD.

One family blames it for their son's suicide, while some young people in Olympia are warning of the dangers of the herb called salvia.

"It messed me up good. It got my heart beating really fast, it was hard to breathe, hard to concentrate it, made me thirsty,” said Kyle Prouty from Olympia.

Although legal, the drug is a dangerous hallucinogen.

Kyle and April Peabody were at the same party where one of their friends smoked salvia and got dangerously high.

It can also make people violent. Kathy Blackwell described one family member who “smashed the mirrors in his house with his head, threatening his wife. He went into a rage and he's not a mean guy,” she said.

Salvia may be tied to the suicide death of Brett Chidester, who set himself on fire.

Legislation making salvia possession illegal is currently being considered in New York and Delaware.

But the herb from the mint family is still legal to buy and sell in Washington state. In fact, we found a place selling it in just 10 minutes.

The salvia divinorum plant is indigenous to Mexico.

Saw this on Seattle's King 5 news website....

I knew it would get more media exposure as soon as I heard of people doing it at raves to get fucked up.

In my opinion, salvia is more powerful than just about any hallucinogen, i've seen it make raving lunatics out of experienced psychonauts (only for the time they were under the influence, about a few minutes)

It can be an amazing teacher if well-respected and used with care... set and setting are important, as is having a (or more than one) competent tripsitter

I'll probably be schedule I before we know it

Have you a link? :)

Yes I can imagine it being made illegal soon...

The accounts of violence they give sound like a load of bollocks.

8) And alcohol never caused such beheviour, of course.

its not even possible to be agressive when tripping on salvia....

^ ya u are so fucked up that u will never be aggressive, you might do something stuipid to hurt urself but u wouldnt be agressive by any means.

"He went into a rage and he's not a mean guy"..... oh ya and what does alcohol, the legal drug, do??? Such a stuipid society that alcohol is legal when there is more deaths and accidents from driving, and its legal??? compared to weed or something where it doesnt kill ya or impair your driving not nearly as much as alcohol....

I thought this kid killed himself by carbondioxide poisoning?

popular party drug? riiiiiiight 8)

the person who wrote this article should be fired.. it's obvious they did little to no research (didn't even get the method of suicide right 8)), and they even have conflicting statements in two almost identical sentences. ("It’s perfectly legal but may be dangerous."/"Although legal, the drug is a dangerous hallucinogen.")

people have been saying salvia is going to be scheduled for years.. it might be outlawed on a state by state basis but for the time being i'm pretty confident it will remain legal on the national level.

Run for cover! Dig your trenches! A new drug is here! Not just here but everywhere! People are being crushed into balls of silly puddy and exploding in midair from this dangerous new party drug! Run for cover!

this fucking country, according to recent statistics, 200,000 people died from alcohol poisoning last year, thats breaks down to about 550 people a day, not to mention those dying from cigarettes. but salvia, which might have caused one person to commit suicide may become a schedule I drug.

I tried salvia once and doubt I will ever do it again. It wasn't my idea of a fun party drug. I started laughing so hard I felt almost paralyzed and totally left my body for a short period. I couldn't imagine that shit getting so popular people were doing it at raves...

pretty soon alcohol is going to be illegal due to all this anti-alcohol shit going on so people can sound ok to legalize other drugs....

NO! Not MADE YOU THIRSTY! Yeah, sounds like it done did you right, Kyle. Idiot. I sent an email to [email protected] complaining about it. I realize that my email won't do anything, but if everybody threw in their 2 cents, maybe it would do something.

^for sure man, i sent one in for the fuck of it

"hard to concentrate", thats complete bullshit right there, you are fucking unconcious, concentrating is out of the question...

What the fuck? Salvia is nowhere near a fucking party drug what kind of moron wrote this? Obviously more unresearched bullshit the media love to promote.

Once again a lack of research

"It messed me up good. It got my heart beating really fast, it was hard to breathe, hard to concentrate it, made me thirsty,”
Red bull makes your heart beat fast so what? They don't even descrive the real effects of salvia, they just say it makes your heart beat fast and you get thirsty...running does the same thing, idiots

Kyle and April Peabody were at the same party where one of their friends smoked salvia and got dangerously high.
What the hell is considered dangerously high? Quite an adjective they used to describe a very calm psychedelic. Not to mention they just so happened to be a party this dude got 'Dangerously High'

In conclusion this really made me angry, once again another idiotic journalist with not even the slightest clue what they're talking about. Why do they even bother writing a paragraph, just write "Salvia is bad -Jesse Jones" :X :X :X

They said "its effects are similiar to LSD".

I have to say thats its stronger then LSD IMO, ive tripped on LSD twice, pretty fucking hard too, and i still think salvia is a way different experience and in a different league, my trip on salvia was THE most intense thing of my life.

i seen this on Channel 13 Fox News in Arkansas,USA a couple weeks ago...

and the headline segment was "a new party drug that your kids are taking - it's more potent than marijuana and it's perfectly legal"

w.t.f.

you can't even compare the two
what a bunch of tards
