saffron??

A while back a friend of mine came to me with a recepie that basiclly looked like a typical meth recepie(tolulene,muratic acid,ect.).Except what seemed to be the key ingredeint was safferon or saffer oil(sp.).I thought it was bullshit but helped him get setup with what he needed anyway.To make a long story short,a few days later he came to me with this brown,moist,scary lookin shit that smelled like some strong-ass rootbeer.I would'nt have fed the shit to a mangy dog.
Recently though,i've read a post saying that a certain drug had a "licorice"smell and have heard more than one person talk about supposed "meth" they bought that had what they described as a similar smell.Was my normally stupid friend on to something with this saffron recepie or is it just coincedense?

Well, I don't know much about meth synthesis, but I seem to recall reading that safrole, the main component of sassafras oil, is used as a starting point for making MDxx.
