I've read in the past a bunch of rumors that certain eye drops contain chemicals that can slowly damage the eye (I think the brand Clear-Eyes was mentioned).

Does anyone know of any trustworthy brands that are certainly known to be safe and free of damaging chemicals? Hopefully they will be available at Walmart but any suggestions appreciated.

I have beautiful blue eyes and I hate to place anything in them for cosmetic purposes. However, since I smoke chronic daily I often need a quick cover on rare occasions when red eyes would look strange. I have always used Visine original as needed (like once or twice a month) for years and have no side effects, don't know about other brands though. Hope that helps.

i am "addicted" to eye drops and have often wondered what the consequences are of near daily use. i use both the red relievers, allergy relief drops, and plain "tears" type. so far i've had nothing bad happen, i've been using them regularly for about 6 or 7 years maybe more. eye exams are always ok and i havent decreased my vision in any way.

i have heard here and there of things that can happen with chronic use, but the only major thing is "Rebound redness" - not after one use but people who use the red relief drops for YEARS will report that for weeks after discontinuing the drops their eyes are constantly red, very red, and nothing can stop it. eventually it will clear but this seems to be the major complaint. i have also noticed that the more i use them, the more frequently they seem to get red. if i stop using them for a week, it just seems like i need them less. its a cycle.

i do know that used infrequently, all the drops are safe - but they were not designed for continuous use, or anything to close to that. i would say you are ok with all of them if you don't use them all that often.

i too have heard particularly bad things about clear eyes brand. that may just be a myth/rumor. i would say look at the active ingredients, youll notice all the different varieties/brands have varying concentrations of active ingredient and what not. use the one with the least amount that still works for you.

I don't smoke, but i'm a contact lens wearer. Sometimes my eyes get dry and red, especially with some eye make-up.

I rely on Naphcon-A. I bought it at CVS.

Similasan makes a few types of drops, one for allergy and one for pink eye that I've tried and they are pretty good. Supposedly holistic and I can tell you they don't sting like most of the other drops can if your eyes are really irritated.

Visine has the rebound effect. Those who use that brand tend to have chronic red eyes.
Clear Eyes or Naphcon A does not due to the chemical component that constricts the conjunctival vessels.

visine doesn't even clear up redness for me but it does lube my eyes up and make them feel a lot better. naphcon-a does clear up the red real well but it makes my eyes feel raw and unpleasant. i guess it just comes down to whatever feels best to you. personally, i don't think it's even healthy to do anything about red eyes. i mean, it's common medical knowledge that an inflammation is the body's way of dealing with the problem and it's best not to interfere unless necessary. it's probably more important to deal with what's causing the problem instead of trying to silence the symptom

Trust me, I am an avid naturopathy practitioner. But as far as I know there is no way to prevent/treat this cannabis (combined with ceiling fan on high) side-effect without eye drops. Right now I use Visine original eye-drops bout once/week or 2-3x/month. Maybe buying natural tears would be healthier (effectiveness?)? But this is still 'human intervention', though I'm only concerned with health risks directly from the eye-drop ingredient(s)

Anyway, thanks for responding.

YEah, been using clear eyes for 7 years now and now it's the only one that will work for me, since i use it on the daily i've had problems using it in combination with other drops. some times creating a strong burning sensation resulting in red eyes.

if your worried about your eyes then your best bet is to fight the actual cause: dehydration. drink a large glass of water or two and blink freaquently, stoner's forget to do that some times. if i have nothing i can typicaly blink my eyes white in 2 or 3 minutes.

and remember, eye redness is a sign of dehydration: take it as a way your body uses to let you know that your thirsty.

^^ That's good insight, but I'm certain I get enough water through the day, including when stoned. I also take Omega-3, D3, and multivitamin supplements.
