Safely using SSRIs with other drugs

I have quite recently started taking 50mg zoloft (setraline) for depression and anxiety. I have over the last 6 months or so cut back on my drug use. I am yet to use any drugs other than alcohol and a little codeine with an SSRI.

I was wondering what are the drugs that can be used safely with SSRIs, and which ones should be steered well clear of?

Well MDMA is going to be out of the question. There are some good responses in this thread: http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=467164

As for other drugs I'd avoid weed, psychadelics & stimulants. I mean if you're struggling with depression and anxiety then it's not really wise to be dabbling in them anyway until you're in a better mindset. Would it hurt to just completely take a break from all illicits for a few months and concetrate on your mental health?

You should definitely steer clear of alcohol.

Thanks for the quick response, Belarki.

Yeah i gathered MDMA was out of the question. Not that it is around anyway:\. Ditto DXM due to serotonin syndrome.

I was specifically wondering about stimulants like cocaine and speed. Also, psychedelics. I know that LSD works on serotonin also, and I was wondering if using it with an SSRI might lead to serotonin syndrome or an increased or decreased effect?

Why do you say to steer clear of alcohol? I know you aren't supposed to drink with them (not sure why though). but I had 5 beers last night and felt a normal kind of drunkeness one would expect of that many, plus I feel fine today.

I haven't been using much in the way of drugs lately. I have my birthday coming up in a month and new years I'll also want to party. Also I do like to trip maybe every 2-3 months, and I consider it quite mentally healthy. Since having depression I haven't noticed any increase in negative effects during my trip (though with stimulants I get a quite anxious comedown).

My depression and anxiety are at the milder end of the spectrum. I could probably get by without SSRIs and remain pretty functional, but I would just be unhappy all the time:(

^ I used LSD while on SSRIs and SNRIs plenty of times and there probably was a diminished effect but nothing major, not compared to MDMA.

The alcohol thing isn't so much safety as it is counter-productive to drink while on antidepressants. Have a look into the effects alcohol has on serotonin, it depletes it in the long term but also has short-term effects. The one anti-depressant I was on that really had unusual effects when combined with alcohol was effexor (225mg). I'd be fine for the first few drinks and then completely black out after a couple more.

225mg of effexor is quite a high does isnt it. doesnt it usually come in 75/150 mgs. glad it worked out for you, when i started on lexapro (just 10mgs) one drink would send me loopy.

hey mate,

i also take zoloft, worked great for me and my problems. I am now in my tapering off period down to just 25mgs.
as stated avoiding stimulants is one of the best things to do (as im aware you know) while i was on zoloft 75mgs i consumed, well most recreational drugs.... obviously ur best bet is to avoid them all together, but i found when i needed to enduldge in stimulants, mdma was outa the question, so i hit the meth!! the zoloft didnt appear to effect with the high of the meth... im not a big fan of meth due to a large array of side effects but that was my alternative whilst on zoloft for stimulants.
found shrooms to have a steady high without being changed due to the zoloft. in some ways smaller doeses of shrooms sorta works as a mild sedative/anti anxiety trip i guess.
just giving u my past 18 months of advice mate, take it or leave it.... i shoulda treated my severe anxitey episode as a time for neurological rest but some times gota enduldge aye..
not condoning any use.....
nd certainly dont touch 5htp (tryptophan) or st johns wort....... to my knowledge these can have severe side effects ( correct if im wrong

Cheers mate,

Well wouldn't you know it?! The week after i start taking SSRIs some friends get hold of some genuine MDMA. I got pretty drunk and tried some. Everyone else was pretty off chops and munted. I got fuck all effects other than to make me slightly more sober, and a little stimulated. i ended up going to bed an hour after taking the last line:(

I did find it stopped the SSRIs working as effectively for the next few days (mood swings etc.), but all is back to normal now.

Yeah I agree with you. Zoloft is really good. Feel so much better.:D

Sertraline (Zoloft) can be used with a lot of drugs. The main ones that you shouldn't do are as follows:
Tramadol
Other anti-deps.
Ecstacy.
Ergonomic (sp?) derived drugs.
DXM

Like, drugs used to treat migraines. They act on serotonin bro, so stay clear offa that shit. I recollect that some ergot-alkaloid derived drugs used to treat migraines can cause serotonin syndrome. LSD should be fine though, just less of an experience :(
