Safe to eat these mushrooms?

Last night right before I was about to fall asleep, I remembered more then 3 months ago in the beginning of summer I hid mushrooms in my bedroom at my parents house (before I moved out) in a shoebox. I went back this morning after class before my parents were home and found them. They were left in a pleated sandwich bag, not a sealed one. All that's left was 2G of "dust" left over from when I had a big amount and 1.4G of intact mushrooms. I remember this batch was very good, and was wondering if they were still safe to eat? I mean I really don't want to risk getting sick over eating these, it's not worth it to me. They also don't smell or have any mold growing on them. They look fine and they are still bone dry. Is it risky or not?

Hey DadankyDank,

You may want to verify this with others here, but I'm pretty sure they will be fine. i have stored them in ziplocked and pleated plastic bags for half a year, sometimes a year. After half a year or more the will loose a little bit of their potency but will still have a good trip.

Eating the mushroom dust is fine, and sometimes stronger - Really the only possible harm you could be engaging in is what ever dirt or other materials made their way into the bag. Which in most cases isn't the worst thing in the world.

The fact that you mention them being bone dry suggests proper drying technique, or at least at some point. If they are dried incorrectly and contaminations infect them, then they are made bone dry... well then there could be molds that still added toxins, but this sounds unrealistic if we look at your case.
Other than that I agree that dirt and stuff like that could cause you problems but if it just looks like the material is only made of 'mummified' :D mushroom tissue, degradation seems to be the only thing left I can think of to take into account.

It's not really great that they were not stored airtight, air or well the oxygen in it... it can oxidize compounds over time like the alkaloids you want.

Is it risky or not? Well a disclaimer should be in place: you just never know what kind of germs crept in there so there is always a small chance of some unforeseen toxin, but you would have to be quite unlucky. We are not here to tell you what kind of odds you have, they seem small to me but not nonexistent.

It's probably not a coincidence that you have almost exactly 1/8 left, but if it is.... thats kind of funny.

It would be cool to mummify mushrooms and store them in a burial chamber for 10 years, like a burial chamber under argon gas... then on Halloween 10 years later, eat mummy shrooms. :')

I would go ahead and agree that you should be fine to munch down. I have eaten older mushrooms myself and it was just fine. As long as there is no mold and they are nice and dry I would go for it. I would be more worried about if the psilocybin molecule held up, you may have lost a bit of potency.

Thanks for all the input guys. Last night I decided to eat them and all went well besides I didn't sleep good (expected) and didn't make it to my one and only class today haha. Didn't notice any potency loss really either, had a great time on a half 8th :D.

It's probably not a coincidence that you have almost exactly 1/8 left, but if it is.... thats kind of funny.

Lol it's funny you say that man. My roommate brought it up too. I started with a half ounce and I didn't have a scale until recently. I really did try to eyeball out half 8ths before and to think I was THAT CLOSE lol.

Nice, glad to hear that! You're welcome to post a brief trip report? If it's a full one please put it in the trip report part of the forum. :) <3
If nothing else, I'll close the thread.
