Safe Dose of IV Fentanyl ? (first time)

Hi everyone, Im back and it went suprisingly well, it seems me and fentanyl are a match made in heaven lol, there was absoloutely no adverse reactions whatsoever unlike the tramadol , morphine and etc.

But I was dissapointed that after the test they refused to give me fentanyl lozenges saying the change in peaks make it risky compared to the patches. I wanted something I can use when i needed to most and take breaks in between usage to avoid addiction but for some reason my Dr argues that its not safe to stop and start fentanyl whenever you like?? so he gave me the patches and I have to use them everyday :(

Right after purchasing the patches something important occured to me, its not recommended to wear them when you have a fever as the heat increases the release and absorbtion rate making it dangerous. But I overheat severely as a result of my neurological condition, especially in bed I wake up every morning overcooked and feel feverish after showers and through out the day so how am I supposed to use patches safely when my temperature is this messed up?

Im thinking of sticking it on the back of my hand where its cooler and sleeping with my arm outdise of the bed but I dont even know if thats a good idea. =D

Great to ear.

ANd your doc is correct.. fentanyl is too powerful for just beeing prescribed as a lozenge only, by the reasons he stated. You could OD..
Good luck with the fent..
The temp increase will mostly give you a high... don't worry..

I wouldn't put it on the hand. If you must avoid the chest area, maybe your leg (shave the area first). Hand is just going to be a hassle.

it's worth noting that they specifically tell you not to shave the area first.

The hand is a really bad idea. If you can, the underside of the arm is very good, or the bottom of the forearm, but that was a pain in the ass for me before I added tape to it.

I'm very happy and relieved for you Unlucky! I will PM you as I think I promised to add you to msn or something :)

Thanks you everyone for your well wishes but I really am Unlucky (hence the name), I spoke too soon as things went bad shortly after my last message on here.

Last night 8 hours after the fentanyl drip test I started experiencing difficulty breathing and my chest felt tight, It was a very familiar reaction I recognised from the previous adverse reactions Ive had to other opiates. I hadnt even taken a fent opatch yet but it was pretty severe so I went to the ER....

They asked me if I had anythiing or done anything different that day, I told them about the fent test and imideatly the ER dr tells me it seems like im having a delayed respiratory depression to te fentanyl. I told him that wasnt possible as the test earlier went great, he responds saying that the excess fentanyl was absorbed into my muscles and tisue and later during the 8 hours my body had built up antibodies to it being a new foreign thing and later the fentanyl was released back into my system from the deposits accumelated in muscles and tissues.

Please someone tell me this Dr is talking shit, I really dont want to belive him, im hoping he made a mistake and the whole problem was just a coincidence.

When i got home I had alook on the web to see if his diagnosis was bogus and I found these articles on Delayed respiratory depression following fentanyl...

http://archsurg.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/123/1/66

http://grande.nal.usda.gov/ibids/index.php?mode2=detail&origin=ibids_references&therow=206938

Coincidently enough both articles state that the fentanyl gets re-relased into the system after the patient experiences hyperthermia or re-warming of the body which unlocks the stored fentanyl deposits, my experience started last night right after my usual episodes of overheating which occur on a daily basis.

Id rather not belive this is what happened and would apreciate if anyone can prove it wrong.

Oh, I am sorry to hear that Unlucky! Just when it seemed to be going so well. I can take a look at those articles later (it's a bit late here now) but I doubt I'm going to be able to argue against a doctor's opinion, combined with what looks like two reliable sources, plus the reaction you had.

Is there nothing else they can give you as a strong pain reliever?

seems like that's the same article. Only a few months difference, same authors, probably double published.

I dont want to trouble you guys with this topic any further, youve all been very kind, understanding and helpful, but for me I gues it wasnt meant to be,

I have 2 options here, first I can try the patches and see if infact I really have developed adverse reactions to fentanyl due to antibodies or whatever, or last and finally im just gona give up, im not a very lucky person and body is fucked beyond my own understanding , I might just have to accept it and live with the pain, I feel defeated and im done fighting this or looking for solutions. Thanks everyone your all amazing people, and I have learnt so much here from you all.

peace

I really hope you can find some other reasonably effective pain reliever Unlucky. To live your whole life in chronic severe pain is very depressing as well as being extremely debilitating and uncomfortable.
