ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - Authorities in Roswell say two third-graders at Berrendo Elementary School have been caught by their principal smoking marijuana in a bathroom after school hours.

When a responding sheriff's deputy asked 1 of the boys how many times he had smoked pot, the boy replied he has "hit it hard a lot."

Chaves County Sheriff's Lt. Britt Snyder told the Roswell Daily Record deputies have responded to calls about drugs in elementary schools before. But Snyder says the Jan. 10 incident marked the first time he's ever heard of third-graders using drugs.

According to police reports, principal Kathleen Gallaway doesn't want to press charges and will punish the children "administratively through the school."

Although I'm one to "hit it hard a lot" I believe third graders have NO business smoking MJ :!

Why would you "punish" a third grader? I really don't think they grasp the idea of drugs and really why it is such a bad thing for them to be doing it. I don't agree with kids of this age using recreational drugs at all, but treating them as criminals (even if it is just within the school) isn't helping.

for real.. the parents and school administrators should be taking full responsibility lol

I don't know if I agree with the word "punish" but there should be some reprecussions to at least prevent them from doing it again anytime soon. I love pot, but I totally agree with spini4, third graders, so what 9-10 years old, should not be using drugs (a majority of them shouldn't be taking ritalin either but that's a whole other conversation topic).

at the very least the article claims that the elementary school administration didn't want to press charges formally, and wanted to deal with it from within their system

that at least is admirable. smoking pot isn't that big of deal, but these kids should feel some negative whip lash for indulging when so very young

ideally, the administration has developed a harm-reduction stance - but we all know this most likely isn't the case ;)

I don't think there really needs to be much negativity at that age (unless it's an on going issue and it seems that negative reinforcement works for the particular individual). A child imo will understand more if you approach the situation in a positive manner, with a loving and caring voice/person behind it. You can transmit a healthy message to kids with out resorting to punishments, or turning these kids into "bad children". Children make mistakes, especially at such young ages with out having much of an idea of why they are mistakes in the first place. Why induce negative emotions/feelings into the child when there wasn't any sort of militant or obstinate behavior? Kids don't inherently want to be a problem, nor want to step over their boundaries. Kids explore and need to unleash themselves upon the world. With proper attention and proper outlets of energy (physical and mental), along with loving environment that promotes the success of the individual through their own needs, there shouldn't need to be a punishment in the negative manner that schools seem to induce.

Granted, I have fundamental issues with the family structure and education system, and see particularly the education system a complete failure in raising healthy, critical thinking, and open minded youth. The education system should be honest and open to all of the individuals with in it. It shouldn't be authoritarian system that serves one purpose, the raising of future employees. The children are the most important entities with in the system, and their voices are what should drive the system. Mistakes need to be recognized as what they truly are, positive tools used to instill critical thinking and healthy decisions later on in life. Given the chance to sit down discuss the decisions made in a friendly open manner (giving the child the chance to think about his actions for himself with out a bombardment of negative words/emotion). It drives me nuts seeing adults constantly using the ol` "I'm your parent who is only looking out for your best interest, that is why I get frustrated and yell at you". IMO if the best interest is in mind, there shouldn't be any degrading of the child for his choices, only a positive push in the right direction with proper knowledge to make stronger choices in the future. Setting kids up in negative environments and expressing "love/concern" through negative emotions/means potentially leads to the criminalization of youth by exacerbating their "disruptive behavior" through out their schooling career.

Ha, that kid's hardcore. At least the school's not pressing charges...Idk how many kids got expelled and charged for bringing Midol and Tylenol and shit when I was in school.8)
