Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, who are both libertarian-leaning Republicans, defended drug legalization during the Fox News presidential debate on Thursday night.

When questioned about why social conservatives should support him, Paul said they should vote for him because his defense of liberty includes their right to practice their lifestyle the way they want. The congressman said liberty needed to be protected "across the board."

"We don't have the first amendment so that we can talk about the weather," he noted. "You have a right to do things that are very controversial."

Government should not tell its its citizens what they can eat and drink, the congressman continued. "Up until this past century -- for over one hundred years [drugs] were legal."

"How many people here would use heroin if it were legal?" Paul asked. "Oh yeah, I need to government to take care of me, I don't want to use heroin so I need these laws," he joked, followed by a round of applause from the audience.

"I never thought heroin would get an applause here in South Carolina," quipped moderator Chris Wallace.

Gotta Love Ron Paul =D

Take it to CEP yo...and as horrible, life ruining and just straight up shitty as the drug laws are, if the trade off to getting them removed means we gotta have Ron Paul as president, Id rather keep shit how it is now.:|

Getting drug laws removed will happen the second you find the leprachaun and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I see your point though Khadijah, the current situation is the lesser evil, as opposed to Ron Paul's teatotaling utopia he has envisioned 8) They tried that shit with prohibition and look what happened, we got a family that rose to power by running illegal liquor, and now they're considered American Royalty.

For those of you who don't know who that family is just do some research on The Kennedys...I love the Irish =D

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Can you elaborate?

I don't believe a word he's saying, he's 'politicing', there's no way in hell he would support what he's spewing right now if he's elected, hell I would put money on it.

It seems to me that he's saying these things to produce publicity, he's embracing a controversial issue that most people feel very strongly about (how many people on here jump on a soapbox about the WoD and legalization from time to time?), and he's using it to gain votes.

If he were elected he would probably just say "Oh well I tried, but my ideas were defeated in the Senate so oh well we lose", and we would be right back to where we started with Ron Paul in a position of power.

I don't know much about him... Anyone care to explain why he's so terrible?

He wants to basically demolish the U.S.'s centralized federal government, and radically alter the financial system in an untested and potentially devastating way. Additionally, he wants to deregulate the market, INCLUDING THE FINANCIAL MARKET (so, without a strong centralized federal government that gives citizens the ability to stand up against international corporations, we will ultimately be completely owned by them, it is madness). Further, he wants to eliminate all forms of social services, including: medicare, social security, and welfare. He is also an isolationist, therefore, he would leave the worlds' markets open to China and Russia to control, while we bury our heads in the sand and get fucked in the ass.

In other words, he wants to destroy the platform by which the common man can wield his power: "big government."

^ I had no idea those were his politics, that's quite horrible. I said what I said just because I have seen too many politicians 'go with the flow' when it comes to issues like this.

^Yeah, I'd rather risk some jail time for choosing to want to smoke a j, than risk losing my safety net (medicare/social security). Legalizing drugs is just not worth it.

Unlike Obama and all the others who only say what they need to say to get elected, Paul has a VERY solid track record of voting based on his ideals, i.e. what he believes to be "constitutional". He believes in sound money, state's rights and freedom from govt. interference in individual's lives...Not sure how that's crazy, clusterfucked or crackpot-ish exactly, but to each his own.

Beats the hell out of the lame 2-party bullshit we have now, where candidates only APPEAR to take different stands on the issues but really run shit exactly the same. But hey.

^Ridiculous post. I'm not even going to respond to the first part to respect the thread topic. The last sentence takes the cake though. Why do you think the laws have been constructed to exist as they do? Perhaps a few "big government" agencies acting to protect the best honey pot there is? AKA: "money-from-nothing"? How are the laws going to ever change as long as these agencies continue their massive efforts of basically censoring cognitive liberties?

Dr. Ron Paul seems to have an actual answer and reason while the others beat around the bush. From what it seems, Paul believes in the essential part of the U.S. which is the big "C" word, dare I say it? Maybe he's just saying it to get votes, maybe he's not. It's politics.... most important thing is he cares about core values which have the forefathers rolling in their graves in this age AND he is consistent with his opinions. He does not want the status quo. It's simply not working and people are starting to smell the bullshit.

His "answer" is eliminating the bulk majority of the US government. That is not what the populace wants and would effectively destroy our country.

Quoted for emphasis. The USA's Federal gov't is SUPPOSED to have a very limited role, with people setting the vast majority of the additional rules by which they live (if any) at the STATE and LOCAL levels. That's why it's the united STATES of America and not one monolithic entity; the founding fathers knew the latter model tends to become out of touch with the needs and wishes of the governed as well as much more easily hijacked and steered into tyranny than the former.

That's why the Tenth Amendment to the US Constitution states:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

And to quickly address the idea that he's pandering to folks who support legalization just to get votes (or pandering to any group for that matter), I must encourage you to look up his Congressional voting record. He CONSISTENTLY votes for what is CONSTITUTIONAL and what he vocally supports, NOT some party line.

Some of you people on here may not like his ideas (you know, like the return of a government Of, By, and For the People instead of the police state into which the current government is rapidly degenerating) but you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT truthfully accuse him of making statements such as these "just to get votes" because that just is not the case.

What do you mean "bull"?

I've followed the guy for almost 10 years, I know his policies. 8)

The statement I made above is completely accurate.
