Police catch 21 for drink and drug driving

MORE than 20 drunk or drug-affected drivers were caught on Melbourne roads overnight.

The booze bus tested 3919 motorist, with 19 over the alcohol limit and two drivers testing positive for drugs.

They buses were set up around the CBD and on Kings Way, Normanby Road and Alexandra Avenue, in Clarendon St, outside the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and in Southbank Boulevard.

Acting Senior Sergeant Simon Stevens from St. Kilda Rd. Police said that he was disappointed with the number of impaired motorists caught.

``We are out here to be visible and to give drivers the opportunity to make the right decisions about drink and drug driving,'' he said.

``There are obviously still a lot of people out there who are aware of our presence and yet still take the risk of getting caught.''

The operation was conducted after 32 Victorians lost their lives on our roads last month.

My court date is fast approaching on this issue. I hope I just cop a fine & no license suspension:\

Drug drivers on police radar
Monday, 02 November 2009 07:21

Police will double the number of random drug tests they conduct over the next three years as the Roadside Drug Testing program is expanded state-wide.

Around 20,000 drivers are tested for drugs every year, and police will double this to around 40,000 by the end of 2012.

The roadside drug testing devices test for three types of illicit drugs, methylamphetamine (Speed, Ice), MDMA (Ecstasy) and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Cannabis).

Deputy Commissioner for Road Policing Ken Lay said the expanded program will see more random roadside drug tests occur across the state.

"Police from all five of the state's regional boundaries will be equipped to greatly increase the number of random drug tests performed," he said.

"Drug drivers are an emerging problem for police and the expansion of this program will see more drivers tested, and ultimately, more drivers caught for driving while drug affected."

In the 2008-2009 financial year, 22,998 roadside drug tests were conducted with 341 offenders caught with an illicit substance in their system.

This equates to a strike rate of 1 in 67.

The drug testing process involves a preliminary test at the road side, similar to a breath-test for alcohol.

If the test returns a positive indication, the driver attends a drug bus or police car for a second test.

That sample is then sent for laboratory analysis. Once it is confirmed the sample contains an illicit substance, the driver is prosecuted.

Mr Lay said the expanded program, which includes the purchase of 25 additional testing devices, and 25,000 roadside drug test kits, will ensure that drugged drivers are targeted as frequently as drink drivers.

"We'll be running drug testing operations of a similar nature to booze bus operations," he said.

"Drivers will now be tested for drugs by police cars as well as drugs buses. Motorists can expect to be drug-tested anywhere, at anytime."

"We know there are drug affected drivers on the roads, and we'll be working hard to remove as many of them as possible," Mr Lay said.

Police to increase roadside drug tests

November 3, 2009

VICTORIA Police will target drugged drivers as frequently as drink-drivers to tackle what they see as a growing problem.

Police will increase the number of drivers tested for drugs to more than 40,000 by the end of 2012, up from about 20,000 drivers tested annually now. They will get an extra 25,500 drug-testing kits that screen for illicit drugs including speed and ice, ecstasy and cannabis.

While drink-driving gets more attention, a greater ratio of drivers are found with drugs in their system than with alcohol levels above .05, Police Minister Bob Cameron said yesterday.

About one in 67 drivers tested are found to have an illicit substance in their system, compared with about one in 160 with a blood-alcohol content level above .05, although a far higher number of motorists are tested for alcohol, he said.

''Drug drivers are a growing concern, with testing showing police are nearly three times more likely to detect impairing drugs in drivers compared to drivers with a blood-alcohol content reading over .05.''

The Government is spending $10 million on replacing and expanding drug-testing devices.

Deputy Commissioner for Road Policing Ken Lay said the drug-testing process involved a preliminary test at the roadside, similar to a breath-test for alcohol. ''We know there are drug-affected drivers on the roads, and we'll be working hard to remove as many of them as possible,'' Mr Lay said.

In the 2008-2009 financial year, 22,998 roadside drug tests were conducted, with 341 offenders caught with an illicit substance in their system.

Victoria's 2008 road toll was 303, the lowest since records began in 1952.

Police say the main causes of road deaths include speed, alcohol and drugs, along with fatigue and using mobile phones.

Victoria Police get power to take drug-users' licences
From: AAP
December 22, 2009 11:21AM

VICTORIAN police will next year have the power to automatically suspend a driver's licence if a laboratory drug test showed the motorist was affected by illegal drugs.

Under the laws, announced today to take effect in mid-2010, motorists found to have illegal drugs in their system will face automatic licence suspension for three months and fines of at least $350.

"In the last financial year, almost 23,000 roadside drug tests were conducted with 341 offenders caught with an illicit substance in their system," Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay said.

"That's a strike rate of 1 in 67.

"We know there are drug-affected motorists on the roads and a mandatory loss of licence will be an extra deterrent to those dangerous drivers."

Victorian Roads Minister Tim Pallas said traces of one or more illicit drugs were found in 30 per cent of drivers who died on Victoria's roads each year.

"In fact, there are more drivers killed with illicit drugs in their bodies than drivers with illegal levels of alcohol," he said.

"If the driver is caught drug-driving a second time they face a penalty imposed by the court of up to $7000 as well as a licence cancellation of at least six months."

Two-time offenders may have their car impounded under laws announced in May.

"Motorists will see more enforcement through roadside drug testing programs, with an additional 20,000 tests - bringing the total to approximately 35,000 across Victoria - to be conducted in 2010," Mr Pallas said.

More like 30%+ of people use drugs and the fact it was in their blood at death was due to this

I'm not saying some accidents weren't caused by drugs but i'm sure many dead drivers only had traces in their blood.

Bet that 1 in 67 strike rate would balloon out of control if they tested for benzo's, cocaine, opiates etc...

Australia's shit roads don't help much either

They've killed more of my friends than drugs or alcohol

Roadside drug testing victoria

What drugs do they test for? From what i've seen on that tv show rbt it's weed and meth, does that mean i can smoke heroin late at night and drive the next morning? And how long do you have to wait for speed, pills or ice?

Hi Boku and welcome to Bluelight.

According to the RBT show they test for Cannabis and "XTC". You often see the swab results clearly say "XTC" then the officer will say that the machine has detected amphetamines.

If you read through the drug driving thread you will find that your questions have been asked and answered before. Regarding the detection of active metabolites in your saliva; the conclusive answer so far is that everyone is different and that different substances effect different people in different ways. Therefore there is no difinitive answer as to how long you have to wait before the metabolites can be detected.

swab testing won't pick up opiates.
however, they can do a blood test in certain circumstances, in which case heroin and other drugs can be detected.

They have to blood test both drivers if either party has to go to hospital as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Canberra. Police also have the power to authorise a blood test if they suspect a driver to be under the influence of an illicit substance.

Here is the Vic Roadside testing thread:

Yeah I believe there is a thread for each state. They dont test for opiates and coke which I find quite ridiculous. Ive been searching around and couldnt quite find the answer as to whats the borderline time driving after having one of the 3 substances. I read that its safe to drive 6 hours after having some cannabis or 24 hours after MDMA. Has anyone been tested negative/positive? Could u tell us how long after did u get tested and were u positive or negative? I think this whole things is just plain stupid. The swabs test for illicit substance usage in the past and its not testing for current impairment. Its a good thing to get people under the influence off our roads but when ur driving sober a day later?

Three close friends of mine have been tested.

Two of them are heavy weed users. Both tested around 3 - 4hrs after last smoke, both tested negative.
One had smoked at 8am and tested around 12 used a pipe ... other had smoked all morning playing games, fell asleep at about 1pm got up to pick his missus up from horse racing (think it was cup day) and tested at around 4pm used a bong.

One female had been tested 36hrs+ after booting up amphetamines and tested positive.

I would really like to see some real studies done to find out approximate positive testing times.
I'd also like to see the government and police suck it up and start testing for OTC drugs that cause you to be impaired. Be nice to see media reports not just riding on the "illicit drugs" and driving propaganda when they have to start talking massive chunks of drivers off the road.

Honestly, just to be on the safe side, at all times you should at least wait til you've had a proper 8hr sleep before you drive a car. Simple really.

As Verybuffed has pointed out, there is a thread on this topic already. The drugs they test for are primarily cannabis and amphetamines (Meth and MDMA generally, presumably other amphetamines would yield a positive result as well, I know dexamphetamine does as I know someone prescribed it who tested positive) and I am under the impression amphetamines can be detected up to 2 or 3 days after use, I seem to recall reading somewhere that you only test positive for cannabis if you have smoked in the last handful of hours (I could be wrong, and would be surprised if they have got it anywhere near down to a science anyway) but that seems a bit off since cannabis metabolites are one of the longest for the body to eliminate.

I am going to merge this thread with the existing thread.

I think the reason they dont test for opiates would be that they are too commonly in pain killers and these tests would yield many perscription users. They really need a sure fire way to test only for recently used drugs that would inhibit driving. Not some topsy turvy tedious method that picks up "innocent" people way past being intoxicated.

Also how insanely unjust the laws are in respects to drunk driving being less severe is a joke. I can tell you know I'd be able to drive better on gear than someone a few drinks down. They dont give it to airforce pilots for a giggle.. Maybe I should try get a dexie script to cover amphetamines ever being detected :p

I've recently been done by the jacks for drug driving. Still waiting for my hearing even though it was meant to be 2 weeks ago. But the slack cunts didnt have my blood results in and wont for another 7 weeks, but had to tell me that after putting my day on hold and arriving at court. I wont be able to apply for a work license due to it being a drug charge, but joe blow that drove drunk is able to apply for one. Fuck the system.

^ I was not aware that you could not get a work exemption for drugs but that is bloody atrocious! Talk about discrimination! If they could show any halfway reputable study to prove cannabis or amphetamines impaired driving even close to alcohol I will eat my fucking hat, not to mention to test positive for piss you have to actualyl have been drinking recently enough that it probably affects your driving. I don't really like how they set up in the morning a lot clearly to catch people with a hangover and not those that went out on the piss and drove straight home, but even then I reckon a hangover impaires you fuckloads more than the average day after a bit of speed or a fat sesh.
