i was diagnosed with adhd and have been prescribed ritalin
i really dislike ritalin, for alot of reasons

it just makes me feel dodgy and its nowhere near as smooth as dexamphet etc.
i was wondering if its a good idea to tell my docotor this and ask to be switched to dex,
or actually wait for him to consider dex himself after i report my results after my 2 weeks trial?

as im in my last year of highschool and we have many upcoming tests
so i would like to be at optimal performace level
:)

adding to that, was it better to say its not working or im having bad side effects (or both) to be switched to dex?
as i do not wish to be put on an anti-stimulant (stattera..?)

p.s. im not trying to "score meds" i legitimately hate ritalin therapeutically, and find dex much more helpful
i am just enquiring for the best advice when consulting my psych

cheers
:D

If your concerns are legitimate I see no reason not to talk to him now. But if your trying to score drugs, we can't help you.

Also, you shouldn't need drugs to help you in exams, but then again i'm not ADHD so that might not be true.

A good night sleep, a big breakfast, and a coffee should see you through. Worked well for me for about 10yrs. :)

haha yeah i know what you mean
i was more concerned with the time it took to switch rather than being successful
...if you get me?

well im not sure about others, but i've found ritalin a far less effective for work production than dexamphetamine
but each to his own i guess

haha yeah i try to get a good nights sleep, doesnt always work
and i despise coffee (caffeine doesn't even wake me up)
ill drink tea on the odd occassion though
;)

A coffee in the morning will have me a stuttering, shaking, heart palpitating, anxious mess for the rest of the day. I dunno how people drink it.

Talk to your doctor and make sure you stick to legitimate use if you are prescribed dex, an amphetamine addiction isn't a nice path to travel down.

Excellent comment. I have lurked here for years and it seems like most of the time, people are just looking for the "correct" things to say to get the drugs they "want" from their doctor, as opposed to a medical "need.

Sound medical advice may not always be to a person's liking, but it may be the most beneficial. IMHO... :)

this is a medical need though...?
i've been diagnosed with adhd (which doesnt mean i *need* them i know)
he only chose ritalin over dex as it has a longer half-life

its not that i dont want do (because i do haha)
its that i am able to increase my work ethic far more greatly on dex than on ritalin

haha yeeh i dont plan on abusing, a dangerous path indeed
i've decided to just openly talk with my psych, no need to keep anything from him

thankyouu for the comments
much appreciated
:)

I would probably give him feedback in about two weeks

This will show that you've given the meds a shot, and wish to evaluate the nature of your progress
You never know, the drug may agree with you this time around, but you need to obviously run a trial and see

It's funny 'cause ritalin doesn't do that much for me at all, 10-20mg gets me thinking clearly & that's about it. Maybe I'm getting ADD in my old age :\

Yer good advice, people often have 'an agenda' when seeing a Psych and think they know best.

As for me, was treated with MPD for 3 years, tried a friends Dex tab, it straight out felt right, i was honest with my Psych, did the unthinkable and straight out asked to change (this after 3 years on MPD).

This was a private Doc and i was paying $$. He scripted me a months worth, prolly to satisfy me, and the specialist number was never sent through to national health. Went back on MPD and that was that.

Looking back it was maybe for the best, having since seen the addiction/tolerances amphets can cause in some.

Sometimes we think we know best-but do we?8)

thankyou for the feedback
:)

yeeh i shall go with telling im how my progress went after the two week trial
im sure being honest will only benefit me in the long-run

hopefully tolerance doesnt build, i already have a somewhat natural tolerance
:(

While you might feel that MPD is less effective in its immediate results, I believe that in the long term it does not lose as much effectiveness as dex does when a tollerance builds up. I do not use these substances myself, but I do know a few people who have been useing them for longer than I've been alive (with prescriptions as part of medical treatment) and while I know they had problems with constantly needing to increase dex dosages, with MPD they have found a stable dosage that they have been on for years and which remains effective.

Being honest and open with your health care practitioner is the way to go. Frankly, it's the implied "rule" of a doctor/patient relationship; you are honest, you do what you are asked to do by your doctor to get "better."

Good luck and know ADHD is a condition successfully treated with medication, diet and time management techniques. :)

^^i may be wrong, but this could be caused by more subtle effects and therefore diminishing of effects
as tolerance is not as notable as the effects were not significant to begin with.

However i may be misinformed and ritalin may be much more effective long-term due to its mode-of-action and chemistry
but i would like to trial dex as well and find that ritalin works better for effective treatment and switch back
but i would like to get a solid comparison of the two before i set my daily regime in stone

thanks for the words of wisdom
:)

Fingers crossed for you in managing your ADHD :)

Keep us posted on your progress... it is, afterall, about setting the mind straight.

All the best with the studies!

cheers mate :D

lets just hope i can keep temptation at bay (as well as all users)
i may invest in some supplements as well, such as magnesium, fish oil etc

out of curiosity, are there any specific supplements that will benefit amphetamine users the most? (in terms of health and tolerance)
i hear that melatonin is great for sleep

...not wanting to start a new thread
:)

I can definitely vouch for fish oil not hurting you - in fact, it has no downside, so get on it.... lol.. wish I'd discovered it before hitting my mid-twenties and blowing as many brain cells as I have ;)

L-Tyrosine when your coming down or on the days (if any) that you don't use any amps can help with replenishing dopamine I believe. I don't have any l-tyrosine in pill form, though I often buy the 'D-Stress Nutrient Waters' from the supermarket and drink them after a day on the dex. They only contain 50mg l-tyrosine in them though.

I also take fish oil, magnesium and a multi-vitamin daily which I think helps. Getting a decent sleep each night will also help with tolerance to a point.

ahh okayy, i shall definitely look into them
:)

i have also heard that 5-HTP is good for recovery?
although is this strictly relating to serotonin and not dopamine?
as i know a place that sells it not far from here...

i will also look into melatonin, as i generally have trouble sleeping anyway
and vivid dreams is an added bonus
;)

i'll have to con my mum into doing some supplement shopping haha
=D

5-HTP is the precursor to serotonin. If people are selling 5-HTP anywhere in Australia besides Queensland then it is illegal.

That is a miniscule amount of L-Tyrosine. One scoop of my protein powder alone has 450mg of L-Tyrosine and I have up to 4 scoops a day. I don't use any dopamine substances either.

Just checked my new protein and it has 531mg of L-Tyrosine per scoop. That is naturally occurring and not added or manufactured.
