Risks of Edible Cannabis

I've searched for threads on this but couldn't find any.

So...

What are the risks of edible cannabis (strictly non-legal, by that I mean non-dispensary pot) in terms of different spreys, bacterial contamination etc.?

I would like to hear your ideas on this.

Be prepared for a lot of hypochondriacal paranoia and health-faddist speculation but few facts.

Apart from not using pesticides inappropriately on your own crop and avoiding herb that you know to be sloppily grown with dangerous pesticides there is no point in thinking about this at all. You are exposed to tons of chemicals in your food and water and the only way bacteria in herb is likely to make you ill is if you eat a handful of melting rotten bud.

This is total non-issue for occasional cannabis eaters I promise you. But the young and tweaked generation will certainly try and tell you otherwise.

Even licking spiders and other pests off of a plant wouldn't do anything. You're more likely to die from an OD than get any dangerous bacteria. And of course cooking kills 99.99% of bacteria.

I was more concerned about pesticides and their long term and acute effects

And OD'ing on cannabis edibles to the point of death is unheard of right?
 
It's a real concern for growers who have to apply toxic pesticides, and certainly it makes sense to avoid herb you know to be grown by chem-heavy morons if possible - but everything that might be used on herb is already used on your food -whether legally or illegally - and/or has found a way into your water supply. There is simply no point in thinking about this unless you're a grower applying the stuff or witness your grower dunking bud about to be harvested in a vat of a particularly nasty systemic pesticide. Sure we'd all be better off with herb grown without any at all - but worrying about it makes little sense in our modern world. Something else will get you instead - I promise.... ;-)

My point exactly.

Everyone knows it's not 100% impossible, but you'd have to have a few million dollars worth of bud to OD. And for it to fit in you it'd need to be almost pure hash.
 
Banned highly carcinogenic growth regulators are often found in hydroponic growth additives that are used mainly with cannabis but not agricultural crops in the US, Canada and UK or fruit/veg imported to these countries. It's not just pesticides but fungicides such as copper and even the fertilizers used. Too many growers pump their plants full of phosphates in the hopes their buds will pack on more weight and think they can just flush it out at the end when in reality you can not flush chemicals out of plants, this is a widely held myth. The most dangerous contaminants are those used to add weight, such as the industrial etchants that have been used i.e. gritweed. Mold can in rare cases cause issues but it's easy to detect by simple close observation. Bacteria is a non-issue.

People have no idea what happens to their bud before it gets to them and I almost think this is probably for their own good because they would be shocked at what a lot of the growers get up to. This is why growing your own is so attractive because 99% of the time it's possible to avoid using things like toxic pesticides or fungicides in the first place. People care about food safety so I don't think it's unreasonable to take precautions to make weed safer by avoiding dealers in the first place. If something needs to be done properly you have to do it yourself.

Not used legally - used illegally all the time and food testing here is not exactly something I'd trust too much.

I thought you might say that but whilst flawed food standards regulation, legislation and testing may be one thing the situation with hydroponics additives is that it's like the wild west. They have even slapped additive manufacturers with cease and desist orders which were just completely ignored for years. In general farmers or other food producers are far more accountable than anonymous Vietnamese gangs involved in human trafficking, gun sales and god knows what. The two are not comparable.

But the real question is: do you really have any reason to believe that the amounts of nasty pesticides you are exposed to through typical use of cannabis comes anywhere near what you are exposed to through other sources? Seems like a stretch to me....

Neither you or I can answer that because it depends on so many factors. There is no regulation or monitoring of clandestine grows so it is within the realms of possibility (when was the last time you heard of a grower being shut down for using dangerous hormones/growth regulators?). Given the comments by other growers on message boards about what products they use and in what amounts, it does happen whether one likes it or not. 99% of the time you will be okay but the risk is higher people give it credit. edit: By the way, I'm by no means saying pesticides are the main issue. People keep mentioning pesticides but in reality that usually isn't the problem. If you're a grower you'll know what I'm talking about.

As for the grit weed - if it's been done in the US or Canada I've yet to hear about it. People wouldn't stand for that long here and there is endless competition to provide top quality product.

Maybe not but here in the UK and other places in europe recently it was endemic, so there are growers that will go to those lengths to add weight and if they will do that what else are they willing to do? The OP asked about contamination and I felt my answer wouldn't be complete without mentioning it.

I bought a bag of apple's 3 weeks ago, put them in my fruit bowl and not touched them in 3 weeks. They are at constant 30c temp and they all LOOK perfectly healthy, perhaps a little more dry, but not one of them is showing signs of rot. It's either fucking miracle wax or some intense radiation, I'm sure these apple's could survive a nuclear holocaust.

Anyways OT, I would say you probably eat more pesticides in one 'healthy' meal, so I wouldn't worry about the occasional brownie being too harmful.
