RIP sekio

Ah shit. I try to pop into the Shrine every couple of months and am greeted with this. Always admired Sekio and would basically skim through posts for his as that's where the "meat and potatoes" was for what I was always looking for. I'm glad he will be immortalized here free from bondage of the physical self.
 
What terribly sad news. Despite all his troubles, accidents and unloving family, he was still young and had many good years left. RIP old (young) chap.
 
Sad news. Sekio was a knowledgeable and no-nonsense person here, a real resource for us all. Rest in Peace. :(

That is another thing that hurts, sekio was so young. He wasn't a difficult guy to get on with but it did sound as if his disability meant he was seen as a problem to be solved by the system rather than a person who had a right to be heard.
 
Poor Sekio. :( He was the real deal. One of the people on here I admired and respected the most. I was horrified to hear about his accident after it happened, and I'm terribly sad to see that this is the conclusion.

I never knew about his accident but as someone who has had a life changing accident I can empathize.

I read many of his posts and definitely appreciated his vast knowledge of chemistry and pharmacology.

Sleep peacefully until the day you rise in the second resurrection.
 
I was just wondering if anyone had heard from him lately...

Don't have any words, just feelings of absence :(
 
Oh shit. Sekio was a unique and super smart contributor here. So sad to hear of his passing on the tail end of what would seem like very rough few years... rip brother.
 
I just took the time to re-read this thread.

@arrall - Try not to beat yourself up. I'm 100% certain that Sekio wouldn't want you to feel like you failed. We have ALL missed calls and you can't presume that missing THAT call makes it your fault. Not even a little bit. Not at all.

Let's celebrate the fact that he was someone who by their truly outstanding technical knowledge was married to that rarest of things - a truly wonderful human being. The world IS better because he made it better.

It isn't just that...
There were a lot of 'what ifs' here.

Sekio was in a profoundly negative place in his life in the years preceding his death due to some severe medical issues that left him stuck in a hospital bed nearly 24/7.
He lashed out a lot as a result and got very verbally/emotionally abusive with other members at times.
He ended up getting banned from the Discord a bit over a year prior to his death after wishing death upon a volunteer's family members or something along those lines.
I was unfortunately one of the only people advocating for him towards the end of it, and it eventually became very hard for me to continue to make those arguments in his favor.
He did express to me many times in that year that he missed having community and hoped to be unbanned, and his death obviously left me wondering as to what might have happened if I had managed to convince the staff team to do so.
Though I suppose if an internet chat was the only thing keeping someone going, they were obviously not doing so hot regardless.

The panda plushie is a trend started by Jesso (another member who was very close with Sekio). He made that site for her and I believe that she had bought him his own Felicis.

I really didn't want to get into any of this but now that you mention it: Sekio wasnt always an easy character - I know - but his permanent ban ultimately was based on a lie and it was therefore arguably a wrong decision at the time. He was a pillar of the community, always full of useful information and this discord was his only relevant social outlet left. We took that from him and thats why he lost his shit after getting banned for something that happened half a year ago despite (largely) following the rules after our intervention. This in return made us double down on the ban. We told him he can write an appeal. I believe he wrote 2 appeals every 6 months before he finally gave up. I never liked putting good people under a microscope and waiting just for the next little infraction to throw them out.

Yeah, I argued as such but literally nobody on staff agreed with me.
The main issue was that he had wished death on someone's family amongst other abusive comments and everyone was looking for an excuse to boot him out after that.
I do wish that people could have found a way to forgive him and give him another chance.
I don't know if that would have been enough to prevent his death, but not doing so did lead to social isolation that may have eventually played a role.
