RIP David Bowie

For crying out loud! She's not even here...

She might be unless you know something we don't. Not like she's been banned or anything.

I've always considered him as a significant artist - visual and musical. Gutted by his loss, the world will be a different place without Bowie x

All I know is, she hasn't posted in 9 days and I haven't spotted her lurking. In any case, it's rather impolite to speculate about people who are not in a position to set you straight. And downright disrespectful to derail this particular thread, on this particular topic, with petty in-fighting (though I will admit, something similar often happens at funerals when family members who have not met for several years are forced by circumstances into the same room and proceed to demonstrate precisely why they have not met for several years.)

Now, returning to the matter we were supposed to be discussing:

Indeed. And he influenced so many people, in so many ways and on so many levels ..... I think the world would be an awfully dull place, had he never existed in the first place .....

One of my favourite artists of all time, so much good music by one man. A sad day indeed. Eventually all of the greats will be dead, Dylan, The Stones, Macca - these are just a few obviously, but when they go, who is left? Any decent music has to be found these days, you don't hear it in the mainstream. I can't imagine people in 30 years time discussing how sad it is when Justin Beiber snuffs it. RIP David Bowie.

But plenty of people are discussing how sad it is that Justin Beiber is alive :)

Heh heh, true dat! Imagine when Kanye West croaks - "he was just sooo influential, his 2015 Glastonbury set will go down in history as the biggest fuckup of all time. A true bellend!"
I dont get the whole Kanye thing. He isn't even a good rapper. He is just an ego. The Queen cover he did at Glastonbury was atrocious. He is just a knob basically.

You'd think that if he really was 'the greatest living rock star' he wouldn't have to introduce himself on stage as such.

There are plenty of good musicians around now.
They're just not as universally known and appreciated. The shit that the major labels push is just...i dunno, it's a dying industry - whereas records were big business 40-50 years ago.
It is sad when legendary artists die. The world feels their loss, as they give us something unquantifiably beautiful.
Bowie stayed somehow relevant in a world that moved on - against all odds, really.
The golden age if rock'n'roll has passed, but hopefully the excitement and inspiration it generated will burst into our culture some other way.

Music culture does seem very splintered in the 21st century, with the rise of the internet and rapid file-sharing it's never been easier for genres to split into sub-genres - each moving in a differing direction so quickly that the "mainstream" of today is tomorrow's "niche".

Whilst I do agree Mr Consumer, I think it's fair to say David Bowie was rather partial to aesthetic alterations for marketing. ;)

Haha!

Regarding Kanye, I also don't see what the hype is all about, I'm actually not into much Morden day hip hop (a few decent acts spring to mind like 'Run The Jewels', they are so different to anything else, almost industrial). Rapping about bling and hoors isn't the sound I'm looking for, give me A Tribe Called Quest anyday...
