rip anthony minghella & arthur c clarke

anthony minnghella, the director of "the english patient", "the talented mr ripley" and "cold mountain", and writer of "the english patient" among many other credits has passed away at the age of 54.

he suffered a brain hemorrhage on Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, while in for a routine neck operation.

arthur c clarke was a living legend in the field of science fiction. of his many published works, he is most remembered in the film industry for his collaboration with stanley kubrick on the seminal classic "2001: a space odyssey". he passed from breathing problems due to an earlier bout with polio at the age of 90.

And to think I just rewatched my DVD of Talented Mr Ripley three days ago.

my first thought exactly: far too young. very tragic.

arthur on the other hand made it to a ripe age of 90. he's led quite a successful life. I have find memories of watching a documentary hosted by him and with an original score by pink floyd's david gilmore (just guitar solo stuff) on the subject of fractals. loved it. taped it. watched it a few times. mr clarke was so enthused on the subject matter. it was hard not to be really suckered in too. i like the bit where he compared to close eyed visuals one gets when pressing lightly on the eyelids to fractal patterns. :D
