requiem for a dream--heroin or coke?

just recently watched requiem for a dream and was interested in what other bluelighters said about it so i looked in the other drugs archive. people talked about requiem for a dream being about heroin users. im confused...
arent the guys in requiem for a dream shooting coke not heroin?? it shows their pupils dilating not getting smaller (forget the word for pupils getting smaller) i know heroin can be white but it seems to me that theyre shooting coke if its white and theyre pupils dilate.
 
I don't think you're supposed to know. The film shows them preparing/doing several different drugs. They're just "drug-users".

Parts of it look like everything: heroin, coke, meth...
But fact is, the movie is NOT about drugs. It's about society taking advantage of those in vulnerable situations. The drugs are like anything that comes into your life and opens you up to attacks, like debts, divorce, death, etc.
And last of all: wrong forum.
 
it never says, becuase its really not important. it seemed more like they were shooting H, and the pupil thing was just for a neat effect... but like the person above said, the movies not even about drugs... that was a fucking harsh movie, made me think alot..
 
It's definitely heroin. The dilating pupils are mainly for effect, and I believe that pupils would also dilate at the moment of injecting heroin anyway (dilation's not only associated with being stimulated.) You need only look as far as their reactions to shooting up to see that its heroin. The scenes at the beginning are very ethereal in quality, much like heroin. If they were shooting coke, they'd be acting all jacked up.
And just for the record, RFAD is the shizzy (if you don't mind being scared off drugs after watching)
 
The guys were on smack, the girl was on coke, and the mother was assumedly on adderall/dexedrine...
Oh and that movie was very much about drugs.. It just kinda did it in a broad metaphorical sense.

i think we're all sure the director just intended it to be "illegal drug"
and the mom was supposed to be consuming "legal drug"
i think thats all the specificity that was intended.
 
Bah…. read the book. They are on everything though mainly H. The pupil thing is cinematic, nothing more.
The book/film is about the “American Dream”, and how easy it is to become sidetracked while attempting to achieve this unobtainable thing.
 
hmmm I'd say that addiction was the prevalent theme of the movie. for the guys and the girls it's obviously drugs all the way through...for the mother it starts with food and then tranfers to drugs (albeit somewhat unwittingly). just my 2 cents. :-)
 
Yes, the main theme is addiction, though there is alot one can get out of this movie..... but id say the chasing the american dream, and moreso the addiction themes are the most prevalent
 
that movies was brutal ... i had to calm down my friend after we finished watching it cuz she was crying on my shoulder ... it haunted me for a week or so but then i got over it ... for better or for worse
 
Exploitation, not addiction... I can't think of why else the specifics would be in the complete background.

It seems to be more about addiction to me. It was very specific in showing how everyone has their own addiction and that all humans have it. The whole talk show thing is about addiction, the guys obviously and the mom, and the other guys are sex addicts. I think its just addressing the human need to have some addiction to a pleasure.

I agree with Shneed - the film was about addiction and social obsession. The lads are obsessed with illegal drugs, making money and dream of bettering themselves. The mother is absolutely obsessed with the world of television, her dead husband, and losing weight (tell me a woman who isn't); the addition of the legal slimming drugs serves to give a kind of ironic pathos to the whole situation. I don't see how it matters which drugs they were using.

This is turning into a thread that belongs, elsewhere. Addiction was the "villan" in the BOOK/film, it wasn't the theme or plot or anything else. If you read the book there is a preface explaining all of this....
 
That's what makes a director unique: the ability to totally change the essence of a story for film.
