The global war on drugs is failing, new research suggests, as the price of heroin, cocaine and cannabis has fallen while their purity has increased.

Using seven sets of government drug surveillance data, a team of Canadian and U.S. researchers reviewed drug supply in the United States, Europe and Australia and drug production in regions such as Latin America, Afghanistan and Southeast Asia.

They found that illegal drugs have become cheaper while their potency has increased, indicating that efforts to control "the global illegal drug market through law enforcement are failing."

"During the past two decades, the supply of major illegal drugs has increased, as measured through a general decline in the prices and a general increase in the purity of illegal drugs in a variety of settings," said the study, which was published by BMJ Open, an open-access journal published by the British Medical Journal.

In the U.S., the average price of heroin, cocaine and cannabis decreased by at least 80% between 1990 and 2007, while average purity increased by 60%, 11% and 161% respectively.

Similar trends were seen in Europe over the same period, while in Australia the price of cocaine, heroin and cannabis fell by 14% to 49% between 2000 and 2010.

"These findings add to the growing body of evidence that the war on drugs has failed," said Dr Evan Wood, scientific chair of the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy and research chair in Inner City Medicine at the University of British Columbia in Canada.

"We should look to implement policies that place community health and safety at the forefront of our efforts, and consider drug use a public health rather than a criminal justice issue," added Wood, who was also one of the research team that produced the study.

^ive been wondering that forever. there have been articles like this for decades. especially in the last 5-10 years. "failing" always..... and yet they just throw money at the problem, and keep trying the same old methods

talk about stubborn.

Maybe in the western states. There is no way weed is cheaper in NYC in 2007 vs 1990.

"MDMA" is a drug people mention in quotes now because who knows what you are getting. Quality of that on average is total crap these days worldwide. I find the cocaine where I live to be crap too, I may not be a good judge but 10 or 15 years ago it seemed better quality. You pretty much need to go to South America if you want pure coke now. Between 1990 and now the price of LSD has at least doubled too. I will say my dealer today has more kinds of drugs and more selection than 20 years ago.
I am just cautious about these articles, I know it means the drug war failed and all, but there is a lot of impure and mislabelled drugs out there and black market prices are still a rip off. And these articles encourage the anti drug tax keep it illegal because its better that way crowd.

When all young Americans vote in every election. In other words, never.

Vote for who? Candidates say what they think the people want to hear to get elected, and I would think the majority of americans remain against drug use. Not to mention republican legislature would never let that happen. I mean, today they shut down the entire government because they couldn't agree on a budget because the republicans are pissed off since 'obamacare' started today. But regardless, republican or democrat, I don't think it'll happen until the younger generations grow up to take the older ones places unless new evidence about drugs/drug use comes out. Until the view of the people is changed, the policies will never change.

"Suggests"? How high is the bar for evidence? If the exact opposite of the goal happens and it's a "suggestion", what does it take for them to admit they're wrong?

"The Moon crashed into the Earth today, suggesting that perhaps the President should not have insulted Cthulu"

I don't agree on drugs being cheaper at all.
Acid and ketamine have both went up in price so has MDMA even from when I started using drugs only 4 years ago.
As well quality has went down for ketamine and MDMA since that time as well, but this would also point to the fact that the war on drugs is failing, now that drugs are being cut with dangerous substances in order to turn a bigger profit.
Black market profiteering tactics are pretty damn despicable

Inflation plays a part in that. Everyting from food to gas has gotten more expensive in the last 5 years.

Third parties would be viable if a large sector of the youth voted as a bloc. There are more people between 18 and 30 than over 65 in the US.

Also, with the right leaders in place, laws could be changed so that elections would have open primaries, in which anybody could vote for anybody regardless of party affiliation. I've theorized that open primaries would kill the two-party system for good.

But let me add that your cynicism, while understandable, is a huge part of the reason that young people don't go to the polls in the US.

^You are absolutely right. I didn't vote last year because I wasn't satisfied with either one of the choices. Also, I am one of those people who thinks that voting doesn't really make a difference, the politcal parties rearrange boundary lines and borders according to who campaigned the hardest and raised the most money in order to swing the election in their favor. The system is full of holes and they eat that shit up.
