New Year's is one of my favorite holidays because it represents hope and renewal.

But I'm noticing that the renewal aspect is becoming symbolic and no longer structural. As a culture, we celebrate the tradition but without the renewal.

And without a genuine reset cycle, grievances accumulate instead of being processed. Cynicism replaces optimism.

We treat it as entertainment. It's spectacle when it should be covenant. It's indulgence when it should be recommitment.

So what we've got is a hollowed out tradition. The ritual survives but the reset mechanism doesn't and a society that does not ritualize renewal eventually forces renewal to happen through conflict and/or crisis.

Renewal isn't celebration -- it's maintenance.

New Year's Day is a day that still quietly offers us permission to remember that.

May this year bring renewal not only to our lives, but to our patience with one another, our institutions, and ourselves.

Happy New Year, everyone!
