In general, I have a semi-negative view of the over use of anti-depressants in this country. I do think some people benefit from them, but many of them sap your creativity or numb out part of your potential. Still, I wont deny that some peoples lives have been saved by them and that they do in fact help certain people. I feel that a holistic approach should be taken and chemicals should not be a replacement for healing your life situation and psychological issues, and other aspects of health also should be addressed to improve your state of mind.

That said, the profile of the drug Remeron is a little interesting to me. This drug apparently has psychedelic properties and is not an SSRI, MAOI or tricyclic anti-depressant. Apparently it inhibits your inhibitors of dopamine, increasing dopamine in the brain. Unlike many anti-depressants it actually increases your libido and can produce some interesting auditory and visual hallucinations especially between wakefulness and sleep.

Has anyone ever tried this medication or had any positive or negative experiences with it?

Mirtazipine is the only worthwhile anti-depressant I have tried, but it sure as hell does not increase wakefulness. Its actually pretty much the opposite. 15mg puts me out every time...

I have insomnia. I only have low energy when I dont sleep.

I hear that Remeron might potentiate the effects of opiates, which I unfortunately have to use for chronic stomach pain.

I read about the weight gain and lost interest.....

Sorry to hear that.

Is there anything which reduces anxiety and helps you sleep and yet does not reduce your energy levels in the day time AND doesnt decrease your sex drive but enhance it or at least not fuck with it, and wont make you gain weight?

It seems like you can pick some of those things but not all of them. Unless I can have them all without serious side effects, I thin I will stick with anecdotally supported herbal treatments which are at least safer and more manageable.

benzos work well for me for sleep.. well worked... eventually you develop a tolerance to it and you have to take higher doses...

there is no miracle drug that will solve all your problems... but i have found benzos have increased my quality of life, but thats just me... i can't in good concious recommend anyone to start taking benzodiazepines...

I already use ativan, but my doctors insist that I should switch to an anxiolytic anti-depressant to avoid addiction. However, none of the available anxiolytic drugs seem to fit my criteria. I dont want to be a zombie or have low energy or low libido or gain weight, and yet I want to sleep and have fewer panic attacks (not associated with general anxiety).

I want conflicting effects that can only be achieved by short acting drugs like benzos. Maybe in the future we will find something.

Ashwaghanda seems to help. It improves sleep, helps you feel rested the next day and alert, reduces panic attacks and also boosts sex drive without weight gain. There is a lot less research on it, but it seems promising and is supported by over a thousand years of anecdotal use.

mirtazapine is a horrible antidepressant imo. it knocks me right out at night and makes me horribly groggy for the first 5 hours of the day. i guess your supposed to adjust to it after a few weeks, but i could only do a week before i had to stop.

Remeron worked for me. I was on it for about 2 years. It helped me taper off a 3-6mg/day benzo dependence. It also helped me get back into a regular sleep pattern again. I was suffering from both GAD ad depression. It helped with both of them. The great thing is when I went off it there was no need to taper and no withdrawals.

I was Rx'ed Remeron, years ago, for my "sleeping problem".

I have always researched my drugs, so I found out then that it was classified as an anti-depressant - much to my surprise. Though I still gave it a try.

Yikes - that shit literally put me out for about 15-16 hours. Once I finally woke up, I could not form a coherent thought, nor make a coherent decision for a few hours after. This after taking half the pill - half the Rx'ed dose. I just knew I couldn't trust that entire pill.

I stopped taking it after that first experience, and went back to Ambien for a short while. On one occasion, I kept biting off little tiny pieces from a full pill, over the course of a bad night with my g/f at the time - that def kept me calm and in a retarded stupor, so I couldn't get mad...hahahah I do not recommend the stuff.. too sleepy... too strong...

The drowsiness is much more pronounced at lower doses - you probably would have been much better off if you'd just taken what you were meant to.

I've found mirtazapine really helpful. I would get some slighty trippy effects if I took it and stayed awake - weird tactile hallucinations like cold water being thrown on my legs.

I wonder if it could be combined with a separate daytime chemical that would counteract the weight gain and cognitive slowing without counteracting the anti-anxiety effect.

i just got prescribed this stuff. my psychiatrist told me, "lets start you out with a low dosage say 30." i just took it for the first time about 30 minutes ago and am awaiting relief.

This is a 2 year old thread, I guess it could stay open as it has some good information in it and I applaud you for using the search engine, but please try and refrain from the type of posts you made to resurrect this thread and stick to posting about your experience, and giving advice.

Sorry for seeming a bit of a grumpous.

i take this stuff sometimes for amp comedowns. helps me sleep for a few hours and lowers some anxiety but ill still be mad irritable the next day
