You're right!

But to be more accurate phenylpropanolamine yields d-amphetamine (as in dexedrine, not the racemic dl-amphetamine (as in the former benzedrine tablets).

But germans synthed amphetamine first in ca. 1890 via the P2P route. Instead of methylamine they used ammonia and got racemic amphetamine.

It was developed in 1966, but wasn't approved until 1985. From the wiki entry:

[Bupropion] was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an antidepressant on December 30, 1985 and marketed under the name Wellbutrin. However, a significant incidence of seizures at the originally recommended dosage (400–600 mg) caused the withdrawal of the drug in 1986. Subsequently, the risk of seizures was found to be highly dose-dependent, and bupropion was re-introduced to the market in 1989 with a maximum recommended dose of 450 mg/day. ... In 1996, the FDA approved a sustained-release formulation of bupropion called Wellbutrin SR, intended to be taken twice a day (as compared to three times a day for immediate-release Wellbutrin). In 2003 the FDA approved another sustained-release formulation called Wellbutrin XL, intended for once-daily dosing.

Still, it was indeed released before Prozac, and it's been speculated that had the seizure risk not come to light, it might have been more immediately successful. Here's an interesting article on bupropion.
 
added most of the ones delta_9 listed. i double checked all of his info and it was all correct (of the ones i posted) except nitrous was 1775 not 1772.

and just added temazepam (1969) same year as xanax.

So anyone know when the dextro-isomer of amphetamine was first isolated?
Dexedrine came out in 1937, but when did they first isolate it?

but yeah, midazolam (Versed, Dormicum) first synthesized in 1976 by Fryer and Walser according to wikipedia.
 
Joke entry - Lithium salts first used to treat mania in 1870s but largely forgotten until testing was done on it in 1949 and finally approved for use by FDA in 1970.

Yes, true.
At the turn of the century the biggest health concerns were associated with coughing (spanning from tuberculosis AKA TB, to "the black lung", a respiratory illness caused by chronic inhalation of coal dust). So when Bayer accidentally synthesised heroin, an opiate which was a highly effective anti-tussive agent, it should not come as a surprise that heroin medicines became somewhat widespread. In fact, doctors of the day even prescribed heroin to addicts as a cure for morphine/alcohol addiction (despite the fact that heroin is immediately converted to morphine once it crosses the blood brain barrier, thereby decreasing the time it takes for the drug to enter the brain, and also subsequently stopping the drug from dissipating back out of the brain into the blood)**.
According to the History Channel's "Illegal Drugs" series, heroin (diacetylmorphine) was synthesised in 1898. It was subsequently banned in 1914 when the Harrison act was passed.
On another interesting note, my old boss (an old school pharmacist who studied in the 1950s) told me that when she was at university, heroin tincture was still a standard cough treatment.
How times change!

** - don't laugh! it was only 10 years ago that the drug companies told doctors that oxycodone wasn't addictive... and surprise, surprise, we now know it is just as addictive as any other strong pain-killer in the opiate class.
 
^ Its odd, all the oral preparations of heroin they had, which were essentially just morphine by the time they entered the bloodstream. Of course, like you mentioned, they didn't know back then what we know now, but they could have skipped the acetylation and just had morphine lozenges and tinctures. Then again, acetylation, even on a large industrial scale, isn't very hard at all.

And "lol" at the oxycontin not being addictive part. I have no idea how those words ever left anybody's mouth, and how anybody ever believed it (presumably the FDA did, right?). Oxycodone, which has been around for (I guess I could check the list on this thread and find out but thats ok) a long ass time was known to be addictive, but add a time release matrix and its no longer addictive? What a joke. Oh well, purdue paid something half a billion dollars on that lawsuit (A fraction of their profits they've made from it ;))
