Release dates of popular drugs (OTC drugs, opioids, uppers, anti-d's, etc)

I'm not sure about patents, but I am pretty sure that MDMA was first synthed in the late 19th century and then shelved as a precursor for a while.

^^ you are right, my mistake.

[*]1891 - 3,4-methylendioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA [patented in 1914])

^^ corrected version

the methamphetamine could have been rather pure, but not crystalized. It's possible the synthesis used didn't result in crystals growing, instead left the guy with a powder.

Then again, I don't know that much about meth and it's synthesis.

[*]1966 - Bupropion - Wellbutrin

First off, nice job- I think this is a good thing to keep around for reference once it's done.

One thing you can add to the 60's is buprenorphine. I've written about it's history several times- usually in reponse to sub questions. I know it's late 60's, but can't recall the exact year atm.

It makes no sense as at that this chemist synthed relatively impure methamphetamine and then for 26 years nobody decided to clean it up, they were all content with taking dirty methamphetamine with all kinds of impurities in it.

The way I read EOJ's info was that the later date was the first time using ephedrine as the starting material. I'm not sure what the original starting material was though and don't have time to look right now. Anyone know more about the original synth?

Or could it have been the first time it was called "crystal meth"? I would have thought that was much more recent.

Alprazolam was first synthesized by Upjohn (now a part of Pfizer) and is marketed under various trade names. Its patent (#3,987,052)[1] was filed on October 29, 1969, granted on October 19, 1976 and expired in September 1993.

From wiki.

First synthesized 1969

I am not sure, but I believe phenylpropanolmine was originally used, and yeilded racemic meth. Then it was banned specifically for that reason, so chemists found new ways to synth it (ie. Ephedrine) which, to my knowledge, produces only d-meth. If anyone can correct me, I'd appreciate it :).

Suggestion: I do not think many of the new shulgin psychedelics have a well-documented history (outside of shulgin's office). So, you might want to post the release dates of PiHKAL (1996) and TiHKAL (1997) as markers for when the exstence of many of these drugs became widely known.

ps. I agree, very good work, EOG!

Phenylpropanolmine yields amphetamine, not meth. Racemic meth can be made from phenylacetone (P2P, methyl benzyl ketone). Racemic meth being banned would outlaw both isomers, so d-meth would be included presumably. I think it was amphetamine which was synthed first.

Added:

*Xanax
*Ativan
*Klonopin
*Marinol (although i can't find the exact year it was created, i read they started doing tests on it in 1970 but can't find anything else)
*Cesamet (same with Marinol, 1970s, then FDA approved in 1985/86)
*methaqualone - Quaaludes
*THC (first isolated)
*codeine (isolated for the first time, in France)
*Effexor
*Suboxone

Not likely, the simplicity of making the freebase into the water soluble salt is childs play.
But they didn't have a reason to do that. They were most likely making all kinds of chemicals just to see if it was possible. The actual use of it probably was only discovered much later. Then they decided the HCl salt would be easier to handle/...

Intereting thread eoj
here's some more :)

LSA (ergine) - 1947
Nitrous Oxide (N2o) - 1772
Salvinorin A - 1984
Psilocybin - 1958
DXM - 1958 (approved by the FDA for use as an anti-tussive.)
Ibogaine - 1901 (first isolated from Tabernanthe iboga)
Ether - 1275
Chloroform - 1831
GHB - 1920s (first synthesized, not sure of exact year)
5-Meo-DMT - 1936 (first synthesized)
AMT- First developed in the 1960s

I'll come back later with more when I have some time.
I wanna take a crack at the 2c-x family but I agree with Jamshyd on this one :\

Meprobamate (Miltown)

Meprobamate was first synthesized by Bernard John Ludwig and Frank Milan Berger, MD, at Carter Products in May 1950. Wallace Laboratories, a subsidiary of Carter Products, bought the license and named it Miltown after the village Milltown in New Jersey. Launched in 1955, it rapidly became a best seller and famous in the popular media as "Happy Pills".

As for other benzos, I can't pin down when these were synthesized, but

Sleep-related problems were treated with nitrazepam (Mogadon), which was introduced in 1965, temazepam (Restoril), which was introduced in 1969, and flurazepam (Dalmane), which was introduced in 1973.

I know oxazepam followed soon after diazepam, of which it's a metabolite, as is temazepam.

(I have a thing for tranqs... can you tell?)

Pipamperone (Dipiperon)

only got an anti-psychotic med to add unfortunatly, might check my other meds tomorrow or smth. :)

Pipamperone - anti-psychotic (a butyrophenone derivative) - brand name: Dipiperon (discovered in 1960 by Janssen Pharmaceutica)

source: Wikipedia / info leaflet

BTW does anyone know more about this med, currently taking it and can't seem to find much about it except a small wikipedia stub :(

good thread IMHO, maybe add links so you can click on a substance and go directly to the FAQ/central thread, just a random thought :)

Oh yeah: chlorpromazine (Thorazine, Largactil), which was credited with emptying mental institutions.

Synthesized on December 11 1950, chlorpromazine was the first drug developed with a specific antipsychotic action. Its use has been described as the single biggest advance in psychiatric treatment, with a dramatic effect on the prognosis of the inmates of asylums worldwide.

Ibuprofen was actually developed in England in 1961. It was introduced in the U.S. as a prescription drug in 1974, and went non-prescription in 1984. See here.
