The law relaxing punishments for marijuana possession in Philadelphia went into effect Monday -- a little more than two weeks after Mayor Michael Nutter approved the legislation.

Police will issue anyone caught with 30 grams, or one ounce, of marijuana with a $25 fine.

"Those that are using marijuana...will be issued a notice of violation in the amount of $100," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Sanford. Authorities could also require up to nine hours of community service for public consumption of marijuana.

The bill, which was sponsored by Councilman Jim Kenney, does not legalize marijuana -- instead it eases the punishments offenders will face and lessens the burden on law enforcement.

"Under this policy, police officers will be able to remain focused on more serious offenses," Kenney said in September. "And many young people will be spared the life-altering consequences of a criminal record, such as limited job prospects, inability to obtain student loans or even join the armed services."

Hopefully this heads south to Maryland and bmore..in the city if you get caught like smoking a blunt I've heard of instances where the cop would take the blunt and grind it to pieces on the pavement with their shoe.

I think it also depends on the cop you have the misfortune of running into. Some realize a little bit of weed is so low on the list, why even bother. They know there are murderers rapists robbers out there harming other ppl and know that drug users are just harming themselves.

But then sometimes you get the zero tolerance cop that doesn't give warnings and will actually arrest you for a dirty pipe (happened to me)

Hopefully those cops become a thing of the past...BC they can all go fuck themselves.
 
this is cool but you didnt really get in trouble berfore it happened anyway. at the most the cops would just make you dump your shit. people smoke blunts out in the open all the time you just cant be COMPLETELY open about it, some discretion is advised. and dont do it on the biggest of streets.

but it is a step towards medical laws and I already got about 3 different legit reasons to get a card but id probably still buy pot illegally tbh
