from what i read on wikipedia. don't know if it's true or not but from my own experience i relapse like crazy with opiates... but i have been able to abuse other drugs and get addicted and quit and never relapse, or relapse very seldomly....

what do you guys/gals think?

do opioids make an addict more likely to relapse compared to methamphetamine, cocaine or alcohol?

I cant say much from experience, I almost always give in when Im trying to stop using something( I usually end up stopping slowly by lack of interest), I do remember opiates and alcohol being easier to stop using that cocaine and amphetamines.

I've been abusing amphetamines for 13 years now. I've tried to kick the habbit for countless times and always relapsed.

But based on what I've seen to happen people around me these years is that a heroin habit is generally the hardes one to kick. This is just my opinion.

[edit] I've never had problems with opioids. I actually use IV heroin but very, very rarely. And only on occasions when someone's got really good dope and is willing to sell me a single dose of smack. But there's no way I would fiend any opioid like i fiend for meth and amphetamine. Opioids have never caused me any problems. [/edit]

Ive only just had my first proper run with opiates so I cant really comment there, but ive relapsed countless times with meth and I feel that I was/am much more addicted to meth than any other drug even though I dont use much anymore. The only reason Id go back to opiates is because of getting sick and the greatest feeling comes over you when your sick and you have a good shot and instantly all the bad feelings go away. With meth theres no sickness, just a huge fiending which is very hard to overcome and tell yourself you dont need it or it isnt going to do anything except make the next comedown much worse.

From what ive seen and read though, it seems that relapsing on opiates is a very common thing also, I guess its just different for everyone.

Lots of experience with opiates and always relapsed. I've been off everything for a couple of months now but know already that I won't leave them alone. Obviously there's a certain physical addiction with opiates I've never really had with stimulants, but I gotta say that the phsycological hold that drugs have is far more powerful anyway it just depends on what floats your boat. I prefer to downers, I don't know why, that's just my preference while other people don't. Where I'm from a lot of people start on the heroin because they want to stop feeling wired from speed and once they've a taste for it they no longer bother with speed - like me - you get the rush with speedballs instead(H + crack). Also, I don't know a single person who's ever stopped drinking alcohol, not one.

I feel a much stronger compulsion towards amphetamines than any other drug. And for that very reason, it's the drug that I use the least. Every time that I've relapsed on it since I've quit, has lasted no less than 4 months, evry time without fail. I can say that I do have an addiction to opiates, but it's functional and I can tell myself to stop if it's getting bad. I do a lot of pain pills, and IV heroin, and definately understand why it's so addictive. But I can use heroin or oxy once or twice as a fuck-up and not do it again for a while, whereas if I pick-up an amphetamine I may never put it back down.

So in this case, I DO relapse more on the opiates than on the speed... but the speed has a more powerful grip on me in my opinion. I'm much more fearful of the meth addiction and what it can do to me than the opiates. Maybe it will change someday, dunno.

I have been addicted to many drugs. Opiates, alcohol, amphetamines , crack and MDMA( yes laugh,,its not really addicting, but damn i had a hard time stopping doing it every weekend) I relapsed on crack a couple times, and realized why i hated it and quit...nothing to serious just a couple days, once and a while. Same with amphetamines. But opiates..damn they get me. I have been addicted to opiates on and off for 3 years now and find them the hardest to stop. Everytime i use again i end up getting addicted again for at least 4 months. With crack and amphetamines i stay up for like 1-4 days all fucked up then get over it for a long time. I use amphetamines like once a year now and crack like 8 times a year.

ive never understood addictions to amphetamines.

when i have done them in the past, sure, once i start coming down i fiend like mad to get more; i dont want the fun to end!

but once i inevitably crash, when i wake up, it just feels so good, so fresh, so healthy to be sober again. i definately want no part of those sorts of drugs for a fair while after ive done them once and crashed. i enjoy sleeping too much, and dont enjoy feeling tweaked for long periods of time. the only exception might be if other people around me were doing it. but if im the only one tweaking, i dont like feeling different and not being able to have people relate etc etc.

so basically, opiates are by far more addicting to me. id put them on par with cigarettes, actually. amphetamines, i could never imagine using on consecutive days even. then again i have hardly had much experience, but from what i have, it definately didnt feel like a habitual thing. dont meth addicts ever crave sleep, or food?

When you're on meth you don't think of things like food and sleep. Go on a 3-4 day binge and come back and tell us how you feel. The drug tricks you into thinking your fine without them. It tricks you into believing a lot of things. Usually you run out, crash for a day or 2 and then do it all over again. Sometimes your tolerance will build so much that you wont be able to afford the amount to get high again.

Meth is a horrible drug to get hooked on.

No wayt man! I know exatcly what I'm going to go through before the first shot is in my arm. I've done this thousands of times (addict for 13 years), how could I forget?

And I can eat on meth. I'ts not pleasant but will force myself to eat at least a big mac (or similar shit with lots of sodad) every 24 hours, usually a bit more often. And believe me it makes a huge difference when you wake when finally had had some sleep.

Only amateurs don't force themselves to eat on a meth binge!

I couldn't imagine trying to eat a fucking sloppy bigmac on meth. Stick to fruit.

^ i was on suboxone for the past year and relapsed over 30 times.

I've been on suboxone for 9 months following about 4 years of daily herion/pharm use, and I've never relapsed once, I've never even wanted to do it. I've been around it too. I've had people shooting up in front of me. Hell, I've even shot people up when they couldn't hit it (with their own junk, their own needle), and I've never felt any desire to use anything myself. I don't even have any desire to use anything else, not even that good old standby marijuana.

I will admit, the suboxone and benzos prescribed to me help keep me on the right track. I'm not sure what I would be doing without them...

What I'm trying to say is not everyone will relapse or feel a desire to relapse in their 'sobriety.' I know you didn't say that explicitly, but relapsing 30 times in a year of being on suboxone crosses the line of what defines a relapse... its more like you never stopped taking your D.O.C.... and just took suboxone to fill in the gaps between getting high.

yeah, me too.

Opiate addication is a hard thing to walk away from. Though H/opiate addicdtcs mostley live more stable lives than coke users/tweakers, I think the dope has a much much more physical side to it. Its hard to explain, I can daydream about being warm and happy on Heroin, but when you do coke/meth its like.......why the fuck did I do that.

Anyways keep all the coke/crack, tweak and other shit and just give me Heroin.

I think opiate addicts relapse far more often than any other type of addict. I relapsed several times after 5 or so months of sobriety, during those five months, the cravings did not decrease one bit and I just couldn't handle that. I don't have to worry about relapsing anymore because I am no on bupe. Not having cravings every single day is a great feeling.
