another one of those threads about ppl get tracked on the phone....

I'm wondering about the IMEI number...i know that this is the number that is 'mated' to your phone, and is used so that if you lose your phone on a plan they can shut down the handset using your imei number.

i also know that this is where people doing dodgy things get screwed over as well....

this number is also supposed to be 15 digits, and i have heard rumors that if it is any different then it is a very good indicator you have big brother on the other end.

SWIM has a phone that's IMEI number has suddenly grown by 2 digits, and is 17 digits long now, which i have been told by numerous people is a terrible sign.

if anyone can shed more light on IMEI numbers, or what it means if its 17 digits, that would be most appreciated.

if anyone wants to check their IMEI number, press *#06#

As far as i'm aware the number can't change. It's written on your phone.

I know a dealer who had this happen to her. She just played it safe and got a new phone straight away and took a few months break from dealing. Not saying you're a dealer, but until you find out what the extra two numbers mean I'd avoid drug talk just to be safe ;)

A few years ago this icehead I used to know had his phone tapped during an investigation that ultimately led to evidence gathering which fucked him over royally. I distinctly remember him telling me this bullshit about IMEI numbers changing being a good indicator that your phone is tapped. but he was as retarded as they come and I would take his opinion with a grain of salt.

Personally I don't know shit about phones and phone tapping, I wouldn't even of remembered that conversation I had with this bloke a few years back if you hadn't specifically mentioned IMEI numbers in your post.

I would think if you have any reason to be concerned about police surveillance you can surely afford to turf the phone and replace it. That said I would certainly be extremely careful when participating in less than legal activities, and it might be worth going straight edge for a while.

I just checked my IMEI number for you and mine is only 15 digits. I have a Telstra pre paid mobile, not sure if that is relevant to the length of the IMEI number. I just checked my mums Pre paid Optus, and it had 17 digits although the last two digits were seperate to the rest of the numbers, so perhaps they are an indicator of something else. Assuming they are part of the IMEI number then it would seem the length of your IMEI number will vary between phone carriers.

i dont think the number changes dude. I've worked in telecoms for a bit with sales. Wasn't aware it changed at all.

IMEI is a physical number on the phone. I don't see how it would change.

If they're tracking anything it's the Sim card im pretty sure.

edit

actually I tihnk there are some "hacks" out on certain phones to change the IMEI but I dunno about it being changed from a 3rd party. I'd assume you'd have to be the one to do it if anything.

just buy a crap nokia on ebay, no need for any details to be written down then.

Definately Change your phone and sim card.. problem solved for a little while anyway.
If your on a plan, your pretty much screwed and need to change numbers aswell.
Sounds like your Just delaying the inevitable.

On a side note, it is possible to change your IMIE number on your phone. Some Shady sites offer this service at a price. Or you can do it yourself with certain software and know how.
If your on a plan your phone will be useless if you do this.
