Redmond police, trying a new method to address drug trafficking through the city, set up a special enforcement operation on the North Highway 97 Reroute Thursday afternoon, stopping drivers for traffic violations and searching some vehicles if they had cause to believe drugs might be found.

The "focused traffic patrols" took place between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m., and warning signs were placed along the highway, advising motorists that drug detection dogs could be working in the area, said Lt. Nathan Garibay.

"If, when vehicles were stopped for traffic violations, police had any reason to believe there might have been drugs involved, they furthered their investigation and had the dog check the car," said Capt. Brian McNaughton.

Two people were arrested on drug charges, including the driver of a semi truck that was pulled over and searched, turning up a small quantity of cocaine, McNaughton said.

Garibay said the new step is being taken because, like most communities, Redmond "has found that a significant portion of crimes is connected" to drug manufacture, delivery and use.

Redmond police also identified illicit drugs as one of the top community priorities during a strategic plan developed in 2008.

"We are committed to protecting our citizens from all crimes and ensuring our community remains safe," the lieutenant said.

McNaughton noted that Deschutes County is designated a High Intensity Drug-Trafficking Area, which provides federal funding for drug-fighting efforts. The Warm Springs Indian Reservation recently received a similar designation, as did Lane County.

McNaughton said they expect to conduct the traffic/drug operations at least once a month, perhaps every couple of weeks.

So clearly.....The 4th Amendment means nothing to these guys;Pathetic.... Perhaps we should go “randomly” go search the cops houses, you know on suspicion of drug charges…;)

Fucking lame. A kid I know got fucked in a similar way last 4/20.

The cops posted signs on the highway saying "Random drug checkpoint ahead, 5 miles", so he pulled off the highway at the next exit....right into the clutches of the 5 cop cars waiting at that off-ramp. Stupid move by him, but cops shouldn't be allowed to pull that shit.

I've never heard of "random drug checkpoints." I've seen DUI checkpoints, and I think even "safety" checkpoints. Anyone else run into drug checkpoints?

unfortunately, this is probably legal. the supreme court recently held that a dog inspection does not constitute a constitutionally protected search, and therefore the officers don't need reasonable and probable grounds (or whatever standard you guys use down there) to initiate a dog inspection.

Any reason to believe drugs might be involved?

Like long hair, a shaved head, a tie-dye shirt, a psychedelic bumper sticker, body piercings or tattoos, trance music playing, etc. etc.? Anyone not wearing a polo shirt or slacks or a tie, is what they are trying to say. (Not that they don't use drugs, of course...)

This is total bullshit. They have taken our freedoms away.

Then again, they do the same thing here in Japan, and it doesn't make the news.
"Random" searches (usually of foreigners or people who look "wrong", i.e. no tie or slacks) in parks and near train stations in Tokyo.

What a sad time we live in. :(

The only freedom americans have is the right to choose which TV station they watch. Everything else is layed out in guidelines that cannot be deviated from, set by the government who are puppets of coorperations who line there pockets with money.

thats why when traveling with banned substances you should always dress nice (preppy) and if you get pulled over for some reason be RESPECTFUL to the police officer, don't get an attitude and if you are getting pulled over and you know that you did something wrong traffic wise just agree and say "sorry I made a stupid mistake, totally my fault." This has always worked, cops can also pick up on nervousness so just make yourself actually believe you have nothing illegal and be calm.

So be RESPECTFUL and don't be STUPID!

YOu know, they are right on this one. It is kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy. This driver, who used to be able to work and be a productive member of society, is now fucked. Unemployed, perhaps he turns to a life of crime all due to "drug...use"
