red face when taking hydrocodone?

This post is in regards to my brother and I was also wondering this...whenever he takes about 60+mg hydrocodone after about 2 hours or so his face will be red, not all red but red spots kind of like when you scratch your face hard for a goo minute or so but that's not the case, does anyone know why this happens and what a solution would be?

Could be an allergic recreation but there's no way to be sure. Does your brother usually take hydrocodone / does your brother usually take that much hydrocodone when he does take hydrocodone?

Rashes can be a sign of an allergic reaction, for sure.

Just speculating here (I know, bad!) but if you're taking 60mg+ hydrocodone what dosage form is the hydrocodone in? Is your brother just taking twelve 5/500 Vicodins or six 10/325 Norcos or is he using the Cold Water Extraction method?

If he's just popping the pills with a large amount of acetaminophen (APAP, or Tylenol) that could be causing the reaction or at least making it worse.

..I hope he's not taking twelve 5/500 Vicodins, that would put him at 6000mg APAP, which is way above the maximum daily recommended intake of 4000mg.

No they're always 10/325's when he takes that much and he's been taking opiates for quite some time now at least a year

hmmm... just throwing this out there, opiates tend to have a warming effect on people including myself. The red face could be attributed to this. I probably wouldn't think twice about having a red face when on opiates, because I always feel an intense warming sensation. If it were an allergic reaction, he would probably be experiencing some other more serious reactions. That, and the rash, or whatever you call it, would probably extend to other regions of the body.

Well, it seems histamine related for sure. Opiates are known to cause histamine release. I'm red faced especially on codeine.

I would have to agree with K'd out. Sounds like a histamine reaction. Tell 'your brother' to take 25-50mg of diphenhydramine (benadryl) along with his dose of hydrocodone. Should help reduce the red face along with the itching.
