I saw the synthesis that you posted for this class of agents a while ago.
If you want opioid activity why not develop like ketobemidone instead of like pethidine:

It's still conjecture (at this stage) if a secondary or tertiary amine is the best choice.

Yes, that is a good idea (the benzylic-(C=O)-CH2CH3), but really opioids are not my thing at all, and I have a hunch that Bz-(C=O)-O-CH3's are more fun.
