I tried to ask this same question and a moderator took it down, in spite of lots of threads on this subject. Anyway nobody answered the poster's question, which is about simply dissolving in alcohol and evaporating. I tried this with a batch of white powder, and it worked, crystals formed, but the weird thing was, they were _black_. Any thoughts on why this is? Anyone know any less complicated ways of accomplishing this and getting good looking crystals?

I dissolved it in vodka and then waited for it to evaporate out

That does not clean your substance as you get back what you started with.

If you do not have an idea what you are doing please skip the whole thing as you could cause more harm than good to yourself. Sorry to be that direct but I think in this case this is better for you that way.

Once the IPA is hot/boiling then remove the sheet of aluminum foil and reduce the volume of IPA a little bit to azeotropically remove the ~1% H2O present in the IPA,

This won't remove any water, since the boiling point of IPA is 82°C and that of water is 100°C.
To remove water "azetropically" you have to perform an azetropic distillation, which means:
