By Reuters Staff

BERLIN, April 12 (Reuters) - The recreational use of cannabis will be legal in Germany by the end of the year, agriculture minister Cem Ozdemir said on Wednesday.

Ozdemir was speaking in Berlin alongside health minister Karl Lauterbach, as the government presented its plans for a partial legalisation of the drug. (Reporting by Friederike Heine, Editing by Rachel More)

It's amazing that the UK is in the midst of a recession, the police are wasting vast amounts of resources in finding people growing the stuff when making it legal (from licenced premises). conservative estimates suggest it would raise £4.7 billion/year and employ over 6000 people directly.

I don't smoke cannabis but I much prefer sitting in a coffee shop drinking a Chocomel rather than in a pub. The people are nicer, the music is better, their is no undercurrent of violence and no need for security staff.

Of course, the Dutch 'Smart Shops' sell psychoactive truffles and cacti, but these are also natural and nobody taking them is a harm to others. If it grows naturally, it should be legal. This would include opium but not morphine, heroin or synthetic opioids. After all, while it IS possible to OD by eating a large lump of opium... it's harder than swallowing 60 paracetamol AND naloxone will treat an opium OD.
