Drugstore Cowboy

"A normal person doesn't know how they're gonna feel from one moment to the next. But a dope-fiend has a pretty good idea. All you gotta do is look at the labels on the little bottles."

Gone baby Gone just about makes it in to the venn diagram where the Irish American Gangster and Boston crime drama, sub genres intersect. It is Ben Affleck's directorial debut and much better than his messy recent offering The Town. The first half of the movies tells the story while the second half addresses the narratives moral implications. The opening beautifully photographed sequences convincingingly capture the movies particular milieu in a Boston homage to the opening credits New York classic, Dog Day Afternoon. The directors brother Casey stars in an impressive performance as a PI charged with his girlfriend/partner (Michelle Monaghan) with locating a missing child from. the tight lipped and blue collar suburb of Dorchester.

Denis Lehane, also the author of Mystic River wrote the original novel and Morgan Freeman plays the apparently tough but fair police chief.

Animal kingdom.

Best film I've seen in ages

Just watched it per your recommendation ;)

Great film, highly recommend!
grubby business

Layer Cake
A successful cocaine dealer, who has earned a respected place among England's Mafia elite, plans an early retirement from the business. However, big boss Jimmy Price hands down a tough assignment: find Charlotte Ryder, the missing rich princess daughter of Jimmy's old pal Edward, a powerful construction business player and gossip papers socialite. Complicating matters are two million pounds' worth of Grade A ecstasy, a brutal neo-Nazi sect and a whole series of double crossings. The title "LAYER CAKE" refers to the layers or levels anyone in business goes through in rising to the top. What is revealed is a modern underworld where the rules have changed. There are no 'codes', or 'families' and respect lasts as long as a line. Not knowing who he can trust, he has to use all his 'savvy', 'telling' and skills which make him one of the best, to escape his own. The ultimate last job...

^ Another great film

Really liked this film! Love the scene where he is on the roof of a hospital and hits the guy a little "dink" in the head with a crowbar as far as I can remember.

Wow, just watched found and watched this on Netflix, tucked away little indie film

Most High

70051627.jpg

When Julius (Marty Sader) loses his girlfriend, his job and the life of his pseudo father, Jack, his itch for a "quick fix" suffocates his ambitions and takes him on a trip through the disturbing addiction of crystal meth. Julius confides in Erica (Laura Keys), who lures him into her erratic lifestyle, and their crazy romance brings him terrifying hallucinations and isolation as he learns that hedonism will not eliminate his pain.

Based on a true story, a great film for anyone, especially if you can relate to addiction / stimulant abuse / psychosis / type of stuff. They used a lot of cinematography techniques similar to Requiem for a Dream, especially during the drug (consumption) scenes. No happy endings here.

Here's a good review / summary from another user:

NSFW:

I'm not a film aficionado so no profound critical review of the cinematography, etc. here. But I am a recovered meth addict and this movie hits so close to home with me that it's eerie. Movies like “Spun” and “Requiem for a Dream” fail to bring home the message that addiction, especially meth, shows no discrimination. A person who is leading a “normal” life, gets hit by multiple life-changing events at once, and coincidentally happens to get introduced to drugs soon after is a very familiar story to many addicts. I wouldn’t doubt that more than one recovered addict wouldn’t be able to watch this film because of its true-to-life portrayal. This movie does use a lot of methods and styles found in movies of this sort but it’s because that’s what drug use is like. You do hear voices, hide from the “shadow people,” talk to yourself or animals (I’ll never forget my two hour conversation with a miniature pinscher…she didn’t talk back but I could of sworn she understood every word I said.) When a person is deep down in prolonged and aggressive addiction, they are often in a drug-induced psychosis and thoughts jump from one thing to another or reality gets distorted and fast forwards or slows down. I highly recommend “Most High” for anyone who wants to get a better, more real understanding of meth addiction.

Sounds mighty fine to me. Will either have to work out what Netflix is and how to work it or find a torrent site that doesn't just bring up Bugs Bunny cartoons and shitey US rap albums when I search the title but sure I'll manage to work one or t'other out eventually cos it does look good.

Ya I wasn't having any luck finding it on torrents.

But for most movies, *snip* is a great site. It indexs several other torrents search engines into one.

Just caught "Paid in Full"

It was alright,
worth a watch,
but nothing special imo.

Its based on a true story, so that gives it a bit of a competitive edge, but regardless its still a rather played out story.

3 / 3.5 out of 5

Paid In Full is the one about Rich Porter, AZ & Alpo init??? Cunts ran NY back in the day. Also stars the legendary Cam'ron lol. I think I've got it on DVD somewhere.

There's a good documentary about that story, can't fucking remember the name of it though, it might just be something as simple as The Real Paid In Full but I'm not sure.

another day in paradise

give this one a blast, it's excellent :)

A vending machine robbery by small time thief and drug addict Bobbie goes badly awry and his friends contact street-wise thief and sometime drug user Mel to patch him up. Recognizing a kindred spirit Mel befriends Bobbie and his girlfriend Rosie and invites them to join him and his long-suffering girlfriend Sid on a drugs robbery which should set them up for life. The seemingly simple robbery is a great success but the sale of the drugs afterwords fails badly and Mel and Bobbie are shot. The four take refuge with the Reverend who charges them half of their haul from the drugs robbery to care for them. In a desperate attempt to recover their losses Mel involves the crew in an ill-advised jewelry robbery with Jewels which goes disastrously wrong and the crew become caught up in web of violence that rapidly spirals out of control.
