The Liberal Media: You didn't like delicatessen?

I will be brutally honest, I dont

I grew up on wonderful french movies like Betty Blue and this one just grates with me

I prefer city of lost children , what a great movie.

I have been Vegan/vegetarian for approx 9 years now, maybe that is why I dont really relate to the movie, who knows

It just comes across as being a little pretentious to me ( no offense to people who love it)

There is one French movie I REALLY LIKE its called Holy Motors , which came out this year
If you get the chance to watch it , please do so

^ Was only kidding about the heathen thing ;)

Taste is individual innit. I'm fairly sure I've seen Betty Blue but was so long ago I've completely forgotten it. Must watch it again sometime. Do tend to like French films though. Some true classics have come out of France over the years <3

I used to read Shaun Hutson books years ago cos he was really into his metal bands and horror.
I remember when they made his book 'Slugs' into a film, not very good film from what I remember.

Been meaning to watch Slugs for years. Seen clips and looks godawful. Just as it should be for a Shaun Hutson film :D

I quite like his stuff cos he's such an unbelievably bad writer. Shockingly bad. But also highly entertaining at times =D

Yeah you're right he certainly would never win any prizes for his writing but like you say they can be entertaining still.

Last one of his I read didn't include the phrase "the crimson fluid" even once. I was so disappointed. You usually get it at least twice per page. Was bordering on being a proper novel with proper characters and a suspicious absence of his stock set of phrases even 8o

Quality of writing isn't really the point with Shaun Hutson. It's all about mad plotlines and ridiculously OTT gore and cringey sex-scenes =D

TLM: Will have to look Holy Motors up. Have never heard of it before. You usually have rather good taste (despite a critical lack of Delicatessen lurve ;)) so will check it out. Thanks :)

EDIT: And thankee kindlee for the Betty Blue linkee <3

PROB THE BEST opening of any movie when they fuck each other

With the expection of " Before Sunrise" when Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy rock it to this masterpiece....

I have Holy Motors in my to watch folder. can't wait to see it, along with a few others. I like Leos Carax a lot. Saw Les amants du Pont-Neuf at the cinema ... it's visually perfect imo

I grew up on similar french movies to you TLM. Betty Blue = Perfection.

I went to a shit compehensive school, but its one saving grace was its theatre, which doubled up as the town's arthouse cinema at night. From 1990 I used to pretty much attend 4 nights per week and I got to see tons of awesome stuff on a proper screen throughout the whole of the 90's. It was only £1.25 a pop for student concessions, and 15 minutes walk from my house. I went to see everything they put on, just cause I loved movies so much. Got introduced to all my fave foreign directors there ... they used to do full 'seasons' of a directors work there which was lush. You don't find that much anymore. I found Besson, Almodovar, Goddard, Carax, Greenaway, Scorsese there .. lots of others too. I even got to see Alice and loads of Jan Svankmajer's other shorts. Saw all the big visual flicks there too, like Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka etc.

I was a veggie when I saw Delicatessen (been one for 25 years). I still like it loads more than City tho, probably because it's got a kooky charm that's hard to find in movies ... was quite charming visually and characterwise. The soundtrack grabbed me loads too.

Regarding the veggie thing, altho I struggled with the bullfighting thing hugely, Almodovar's Matador is still one of my faves from around that time (with Banderas still speaking Spanish before he went all American). Love the sex/death/obsession theme tons.

If anyone reading this still uses VHS, I've got the Betty Blue and Delicatessen boxed sets if anyone wants em. It's hard to pass on VHS to charity shops these days ... no market for em

Re: Delicatessen - excellent film. TLM you are but a heathen :p

Depending on who signed it that is certainly an object of envy :)

Can see why you might struggle to find folk who appreciate the film though. Very much a cult film rather than a mass-market one.

Am sure I had a coupla signed videos I won in some competition (never won owt then won the competition in a film magazine I read as a kid two months running :D). One was Terminator 2 t'other was Stepfather III (you mean you haven't heard of that one?!? Nor had I =D). Can't remember which one was signed though. Or actually if either of 'em were for sure. Who says drugs bugger the memory? 8)

I do have a signed Shaun Hutson novel I got for 50p off the market. Didn't know it was signed, mind. Must be worth almost a quid with the signature :D

LOL I'm guilty of reading Hutson back in the day too. He was like a 2nd rate British Koontz (sp) ...

Do you know Kim Newman, Shammy?

Best horror reviewer ever .. he wrote quite a lot of dodgy novels too ... knows his trash horror hugely. Used to love seeing him reviewing stuff on telly ... Looked like a really cool guy

I LIKED the stepfather flicks :o

Bad education might be one of my fave films ever.

As far as pedro goes, I dont think you can beat Hable Con Ella

People think im crazy for thinking its his best movie, but wtf, its about obsession and you cant go wrong with that

Such a fucking great movie
From min 1 to min 100 its simply a work of art, the movie is so fucking good

Mz Marmz: Oddly enough, Delicatessen was the last film I bought and watched on VHS. From the charity shop about two years ago. Me video's knackered now, mind. Know a fella who can transfer VHS to DVD and have a few films that have never been released on DVD I'd like him to transfer for me.

I've heard you mention your uberkewl cinematic viewings before, Marmz. Still madly envious of some of 'em. I very rarely make it to the cinema and never did much in the past either. Never been one local that shows the kinda films I'm most into really. Was a great one in Oxford (which was not far from me) that showed the kinda films you got to see but was a major faff to get to. Was a lovely cinema though - beautiful design. From memory anyway.

EDIT: I know of Kim Newman certainly. Not read any of his books though. <3 the muttonchops =D

And I also enjoyed the Stepfather III vid I won. Never saw t'other though. Is the bloke from Hellraiser in 'em, no?

Last nights shenanigans.....

Me: 'So lets watch this film then hunny cake'

Woman: 'Ok'

*Presses play and 'delicatessen' begins*

Woman: 'WTF? IT'S NOT ENGLISH??? I'M NOT READING SUBTITLES'.

*facepalm* :|

Been itching to watch a French film for too long now. Looks like I'll have to go it alone.

Watched The Guard last night.. recommended! (Somewhere along the lines of In Bruges, dark sense of humour.)
