Recommend another good movie per post

That silly quote on the cover doesn't do the film justice. It makes it seem like some silly, soppy birds film but it's not.

Watch it. ;)

Went to see an old 1970s war film called Cross of Iron this afternoon which follows a group of German soldiers, apparently it's a classic. Think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if the actors playing the Germans actually came across as being German, they didn't even try to use a German accent and used plenty of absolutely non typical German words. It just wasn't very convincing. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out that they were supposed to be the Germans at the start of the film.

There was a round of applause by everyone in the cinema bar me at the end of the film. Couldn't really understand it. Even if the actors had been more German-esque it still wouldn't have been a classic IMO.

Not seen Cross of Iron myself, but is a rather legendary Sam Peckinpah film so most likely deserves its classic status. Problem with a lot of the classics is that they've been copied so often that when you finally see the real thing it can be hard to see what all the fuss is about. Was a revolutionary film for its time though. Is on my To Watch list :)

Also, fake German accents in films are pretty shit.

PLOT: April Burns, the eldest daughter in a highly dysfunctional family, lives in a small tenement apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with her boyfriend Bobby. Although estranged from her family, she opts to invite them for Thanksgiving dinner, probably the last for her mother Joy, who is coping with breast cancer. The film focuses on three journeys: the family's arduous trek from suburbia to New York City, one punctuated by stops for Krispy Kreme doughnuts, bagels, Joy's frequent need for a restroom or a joint to ease her pain, a burial service for an animal they hit, and various arguments and recriminations; Bobby's efforts to find a suit so he can make a good impression on his girlfriend's relatives; and April's preparations for the meal, a near disaster when she discovers her oven is broken. With the help of various neighbors, she manages to assemble dinner, while learning to appreciate the importance of family and making some new friends in the process

I really thought I recommended this one before, but apparently not. Patricia Clarkson is one of my favourite actresses and her performance in this is both touching and hilarious. It's the first time I've seen anyone play a character dieing of terminal cancer in a non-sympathetic way. Brilliant.

You know how Hollywood action flicks are almost universally shite? There are antidotes :)

Just been sorting through some discs and my eye was caught by a favourite film of mine from years ago - Deadbeat at Dawn. It's the rather sordid and brutal tale of a gang leader - "Goose" - who wants to go straight. The leader of a rival gang doesn't approve of this so takes preventative measures. Mr Goose is not happy about this turn of events and goes on a bit of a bender... until he meets up with his old enemy again who has an offer he can't refuse. Somebody's going to be deadbeat at dawn, that's for sure :)

I remember loving this film cos it had such a grubby energy and enthusiasm about it. The budget is tiny - Jim van Bebber has a talent for turning out some damn fine films for next to nothing - and the acting is a mite wince-making in places, but it has such great energy. You can really feel that it was a labour of love to make and that makes up for any shoddiness ten times over for me :)

I prefer authenticity so I can actually beleive they actors are who they are playing than just not bother.

Why would German soldiers be speaking English in a dodgy German accent though, Spadey? Surely that's equally as unrealistic? Irritates the hell out of me anyway. Not a million miles away from dubbing forign films into English, in my book - just stupid, dishonest and annoying.

Lars von Trier's first contribution to Denmark's Dogme 95 collective (subtitled "Dogme 2," following Thomas Vinterberg's THE CELEBRATION) concerns a group of adults who decide to get in touch with their "inner idiot." When Karen (Bodil Jorgensen), a shy, sensitive young woman, follows a group of mentally disabled individuals home after an encounter at a restaurant, she discovers that they are, in fact, healthy and intelligent. Led by Stoffer (Jens Albinus), the group lives communally in his wealthy uncle's house. Stoffer believes that by "spassing" in public they are rejecting the conformity and normality of modern society, and he spends his unemployed days thinking of different ways to toy with the world at large.
Shot with handheld digital cameras and using natural lighting and natural locations, THE IDIOTS possesses an urgency that makes it feel like a documentary. Von Trier sparked a heated controversy with his decision to film the sex scenes with actual intercourse, adhering to the Dogme tenets. (He hired porn actors for the close-ups.) This controversy aside, the film nonetheless raises questions about cultism, modern ethics, and the idea of individuality within the absurdity of the characters' world.

A pretty disturbing film really about a bunch of folk who pretend to be spaz's for shits and giggles. As it has to stick by the 'Dogme' rules it's filmed on a handheld camera, there are no special effects, there can be no superficial action, filiming must be done on location and there are a few other rules too. I'd prefer them to have German speakers and subitlte it. There were parts where some of them had German accents but the main actor just spoke in English and in a way that made him seem very un-German. Let the film down.

Agree with you about using spoken German for the German characters ideally, but short of that I just don't see how putting on a German accent makes anything more authentic in the slightest. Just adds an unnecessary layer of distraction and unintended comedy for me unless done very well.

There are far worse Hollywood sins, and it is really only a minor irritation, but I really don't see how the fact that an actor used his own accent rather than an unnecessary German one is going to be a huge issue either way really. Is a bit stupid to have a mixture though - silly German accents all round or none at all, I'd say.

Tribal: I <3 Nikita :D

Not seen it for many years though - another one to track down :)

^^ Yup. Really enjoyed Irreversible, BC. Excellent film, but "that" scene is pretty fuckin' brutal. A long way from being the most shocking film I've seen, but not one to watch with the kids for sure :D

Another good Cassel film is Sheitan. Best described as being a bit like a French version of League of Gentlemen. It's an odd one, but funny as fuck in places. Cassel is just hilarious.

Trailer Bit of a shit trailer though - film is much better.

PS: Downloaded La Haine earlier on the above recommendations. Too tired to watch it tonight but may do tomorrow. I have a feeling I'll like it :)

la haine is a brilliant film shambles. one of the best modern french films

I'm re-adding La Haine to my lovefilm list for rewatching purposes immediately, I remember it being rubbish but everyone is saying it's a classic so let's just see about that.

La Haine is a classic man, great movie. One of the first films that got me in to watching foreign movies as a kid.

That scene with the turntabalist scratching sound of the police with the flying camera between the high rises blew my fuckin mind man.
