I realized for a long time Id been 'self medicating' with stimulants as an escape when I felt really down. When I hit a real pit I'd say fuck it im gonna get high.

This Ive come to find was a poor strategy because taking drugs when Im low meant firstly I barely enjoyed the high as I have done when not depressed but secondly and more importantly they would make me more depressed and morose after because obviously they've emptied out what little neurotransmitters I did have. This made comedowns almost unbearable and like I was about to have a breakdown.

So Ive resolved to beat my depression before considering taking other drugs.

I find both medication and therapy out of the question. Therapy is good in theory but the fucking government funded one had a 6 month waiting list. Pointless.

With medication I dont want to be dependent on some chemical for long periods of time and besides I find it manageable most of the time its just acute pits of depression I want to beat off. Also I would still prefer a more natural route.

As mentioned my bouts of depression have been generally acute in nature- ie ill have really pervasive depression where I despise everything for a while but otherwise can function fine so long as I stick to my daily routines. Trouble is if I get a 'bout' then it becomes more and more pervasive until I get some sort of release. So before I was taking drugs which as I said made me worse even tho they gave me a little break for a cpl hours.

So now Im thinking food supplements might replace drugs nicely here.

Ideally I dont want to take any additives whcih alter my neurotransmitters long term and am also working on other worthwhile pursuits like playing my instrument but thinking supplements might be a lesser evil in the meantime to keep me away from stimulants while I develop a more sanguine lifestyle.

l tyrosine I have tried for this but dont like as it made me antsy/anxious.

L theanine is looking really promising.

Another thing is getting good sleep. If I have slept well (rare) I feel much more ready to tackle the day at hand. I find im pretty much fine once I drop off but it takes me like 3 hours to get off to sleep usually.

L theanine seems promising for stress relief as I was fucking raging last night and I took some of that mainly for its noted sleep benefits but found a bonus that it reduced my stress. It didnt help me get off to sleep much better but it seemed to give me a calmer sleep when I did get off. Magnesium I found is not very good for sleep since strangely atho it gives me tons of rem I still feel fucking hungover like a weed hangover the next day. Same with 5-htp before bed. seems to give a weird unrested twilight style rem- tho Ive just taken 5-htp now in the morning. Ive read about serotonin downregulation so like I said Id only plan to take such things when really in a slump for a boost to get me back on track.

So any other recommendations for supplements for stress relief and anti depressant qualities?

Might try st johns wort again.

People say that L-Tryptophan is more effective than 5-htp.
Ive also had a few people say they though a high L-Tryptophan diet was more effective than 5-htp.

ah okay, i get ya.

I bought a little amount of creatine a while back but realised it aggravated my prostate problem so parted with that tub for very little £££ to a friend Lol

B12, omega fats, legit exercise.

btw, I don't believe mixing St. John's Wort and 5-HTP is recommended...

ah yes b12 is one I have not got round to trying, cool.

The 5-htp has def given me a ntoiceable mood life thru the day tho not as much as anti depressants ive tried its def there- feels more natural than anti dep's tho so not complaining.
